Both 10/10 movies, but I prefer The Exorcist. I prefer The Exorcist...The Shining can drag at certain points in the movie...But I still love the Shining, especially the ballroom scene...

Both are horror classics, but I like The Shining a tiny bit more. I think that makes it 5-3 in favor of The Exorcist.

The Exorcist. Possibly the greatest horror movie of all time. Exorcist III > Exorcist

Not a fan of either, but have to say The Exorcist was compelling.

The Shining is one of my favorite movies of all time. The Exorcist is very good but not among my personal favorites, even within horror genre.
I agree with screamingtreefrogs that The Exorcist III is actually better, or at least more interesting.

I don't think anyone can correctly say which one is best other than just stating a personal opinion but even doing that is hard. The Shining story and film are a masterpiece and each stand alone as a masterpiece. I love everything about this movie. I watch it a few times a year. As creepy as the film is it's also beautiful in how it's shot.
The Exorcist is als a masterpiece in so many ways. I can't even begin to explain. I saw it first at age 16. I was blown away because it really did seem the devil was caught on film. The acting from everyone was amazing. Linda Blair was stunning as such an innocent child and then being possessed.
So sorry I can't cast my vote on which is better.

I just figured they were not worth seeing kinda like the Amnityville movie sequels.

The Exorcist III is very different kind of film, more like a supernatural murder mystery with heavy emphasis on mood and characterizations. It's the only sequel I like and concludes the story begun in the original classic. Exorcist II: The Heretic is ambitious & interesting but also very heavily flawed. Hard to recommend, but it's not completely without redeeming values. Exorcist: The Beginning (Renny Harlin's cut) and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (Paul Schrader's) are both quite bad films and not in a very interesting way either.

The Shining.
Don't care that much for The Exorcist. The religious elements are far too heavy-handed for my tastes.

Both are great but I'd say The Shining. I found The Exorcist to be a bit overrated and overhyped as the scariest film of all time. It's disturbing as heck, but not exactly terrifying. Both movies do have solid performances, but The Shining has Jack Nicholson as the sociopathic Jack Torrance. Plus it has one of if not the best one-liner/quote in any horror movie...HEEEEERRRE'S Johnny!

The scene of him where he's just lost it in his turtle neck just standing still motionless staring blankly with this off the wall smile and grin on his face haunts me...... I'm not at all a fan of the Exorcist.
I'm a big fan of the Shining.
