I'm not at all a fan of the Exorcist. I'm a big fan of the Shining. One of the few instances IMO where the movie was better than the book. Misery the other. King gets a lot of love - and I love him - but The Shining and Misery are masterpieces of film IMO Incredibly high rewatch value you can watch over and over (for my taste at least) and still enjoy the movie. (I reread the books on occasion too)

The Exorcist. The Shining is a great film, but it isn't frightening.

Once and for all for the sake of humanity. The Shining. 1-0 The Shining! Go! Which is the better movie? Or which is scarier?
Better? Shining (slightly)
Scarier? Exorcist (BY FAR!)

i guess it comes down to one's personal taste on what they consider 'scary'. the shining? the two ghost twin girls? i don't know of any other scene(s) in movie history that made me feel so 'uneasy'

How about that? Even now, whenever I hear that fucking voice I turn into a little kid cowering in fear. LOL
Also, for pure terror, I would like to add the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That shit messed me up too. All the other ones sucked, but that first one is still something else!

TCM - when we first see Leatherface is incredibly haunting and eerie - especially with that soundtrack (screeching noise if I'm remembering correctly) in the background - rather shocking and you didn't see it coming when he opened the door

Its so quick and sudden, and over before you know it. And later there's another shot that's a close up of his face and you can see his fucking eyes darting around behind the face mask. CREEEEEEPY! And then at the end when he's just running around waving the chainsaw?! shit my pants

Completely The Exorcist. Anybody who thinks The Shining is better or scarier knows nothing about horror films.
