I finally got a chance to see it. If you are worried about him writing and directing something like Star Wars, look at what he did with half a million with this film. If you were turned off by Looper because of the time travel premise, check out what he was doing 12 years ago in this one.
At first, I was wondering what's the deal with Levitt in this film, does he think he's some sort of teen version hard boiled detective character from the 40's? By the end, he was like something that walked out of an old Raymond Chandler novel and I loved every minute of it. Everybody played it straight with the underlying farce of the setting keeping things just light enough.
I have no worries with him at the helm of this one and providing the story for the next one. This man knows how to tell a story on the screen.

Hollywood is filled with talented people who, if left to their own devices, could make great movies/tv shows. Rian Johnson is apparently one of those talents.
However, studios usually like to constrain writers/directors by giving them too many guidelines. Star Wars may actually give the new writers/directors more freedom than usual, because it sounds like they're winging it. Rian Johnson might have been free to do what he wanted, to an extent. In the last few days, I heard some things that give me hope. TLJ may not be wholly consistent with TFA, in a good way.

Yes, Brick was great. Its actually a detective noir set in a high school. Very clever. Rian Johnson is very talented and TLJ should be fine. I'm very excited for it.
That being said, the SW series is not a place where true artistic brilliance can shine. And I don't mean that because of Kathleen Kennedy or because of Disney. I mean that SW itself, as a franchise, has a formula, and anyone who directs or writes for it has to adhere to that formula, or its not SW. You can skew that formula a little bit, like they did with Rogue One, but if you stray too far you'll get that uneasy feeling like when you're watching a movie that doesn't quite work though you cant figure out why.
Its why truly great directors like Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Martin Scorcese, etc. wouldn't direct a SW movie even though they may be huge fans.
But within those boundaries I'm sure that Rian Johnson will do a great job. We may even be looking forward to the best SW movie ever made... so far.

Well, "Rebellions are built on hope."

No, I saw his other ones though. The Brothers Bloom and Looper. I am really interested in what he does with Last Jedi.
