The question occurred to me after Day-Lewis' retirement. I certainly would've said him but now that he's done, who takes the crown?

Leo. Not only is his filmography amazing , but imo he's the biggest box office draw we have right now.
The distant 2nd choice would be Tom Hardy (esp with Dunkirk coming up and Venom too) He'll be a house hold name before you know it.

It's a very tough choice for No. 2 (after Day-Lewis).
For me it's a toss up between DiCaprio, Pitt, and McConaughey.
Fassbender is wonderful too though.
Shia LaBeouf is just one film away from Oscar contender though (LOL).

Oh you could definitely make a case that he already is. But a good amount of folks that I know only know him as Bane/Mad Max .

What does that have to do with acting talent? Well, he puts butts in seats cause a LOT of movie goers are amazed by his acting. What other actor could have attracted so many people to The Revenant???

Benedict Cumberbatch. He resembles DDL in many ways - British, dark, tall, lean, huge range of roles, enormously talented - yet he has his own unique style and voice.

I'm just saying that many better actors aren't as popular and lesser good actors are also able to get movie goers in the seats. John Wayne and Schwarzenegger for example filled seats more than most of their acting superiors.
