The Rock, Gal Gadot Invited to Join the Academy" Several actors and filmmakers from the DCEU, MCU, Star Wars and Star Trek films are among the 774 artists invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Every year, the Academy selects a new class of people to join the prestigious organization, which annually votes on the Oscars. Every year, the Academy selects a new class of people to join the prestigious organization, which annually votes on the Oscars.
While the Academy throughout its history has tended to favor dramas when it comes to the major categories, a surprisingly huge number of performers and filmmakers predominantly associated with sci-fi, superhero and fantasy films have been invited to join this year. From the DC Extended Universe, Wonder Woman actresses Gal Gadot and Elena Anaya have received invitations, as has Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie and director David Ayer, and upcoming Batgirl director and Justice League back-up filmmaker Joss Whedon." And as the title of the article says, Dwayne Johnson was also invited to join the Academy. This could be a sign that the Academy may be ready to acknowledge the impact of sci-fi, superhero, and fantasy movies within the industry. Just think: Gal Gadot could be casting 1 of the many votes to nominate Wonder Woman for an Oscar for Best Picture.

Doesn't change how shitty BvS and Suicide Squad are. Seriously, you act all high and mighty like the DCEU is the greatest franchise ever when reviews say otherwise.

Yes, big win. The same worthless award ceremony that once gave Best Picture to "Shakespeare in Love" instead of "Saving Private Ryan."

I still don't see it winning any major awards with that crowd. I love this movie...you know I do...but I just don't see it. I have no faith in the Academy. They gave Crash the best picture award back in the day that there's no way that piece of shit deserved that award.

The Oscar's are so utterly pointless it almost offends me when a movie I like is nominated for Best Picture or Best Director, etc. I liked WW. I don't need the Academy to tell me it was good.

You act like the film is guaranteed to win. Truth is some Oscar bait film will win and that's it. Wonder Woman is a good film, but it's not an Oscar worthy film. The only comic book film that even came close to deserving the award was The Dark Knight.

774 new members and 5 are linked with DC. And assuming that they are all DC lackeys and will vote for WW regardless of what has and is yet to to be released, that mean at least 5 votes. WOW!

5 votes out of 6,687 members is not going to change much if anything. One thing to note here is that in order to become a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts, and Sciences, you have to be active in the industry and nominated by a current member of the Academy. In addition, for actors, you have to have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles (one of which had to be within the last 5 years). To say that actors like Gal Gadot, and Margot Robbie were nominated by current Academy members is saying quite a bit about their acting prowess.

You act like the film is guaranteed to win. I didn't say Wonder Woman would win the Oscar for Best Picture. I said Wonder Woman probably won't win the Oscar for Best Picture because the Academy probably isn't ready yet to award the Oscar for Best Picture to a CBM, even if it's a historic CBM like Wonder Woman.
But I think Wonder Woman will be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. And the Academy inviting actors. actresses, and directors from the DCEU as well as from other sci-fi, fantasy, and CBM franchises to join the Academy can only help Wonder Woman's chances of getting an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
That and the fact that the Academy increased the maximum for Best Picture nominations from 5 movies to 10 movies after The Dark Knight was snubbed for an Oscar nomination in 2008. And while the Academy nominated 10 movies for Best Picture in the 2009 and 2010 award years, they only nominated 8 or 9 movies for Best Picture in every year since the 2010 award year.
So there hasn't always been 10 movies that the Academy feels is deserving of an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. That means if only 8 or 9 movies (besides Wonder Woman) are nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, the Academy still has a open slot to nominate Wonder Woman for an Oscar for Best Picture without having to remove another movie that's been nominated.
So there's really no downside to the Academy nominating Wonder Woman for an Oscar for Best Picture and only an upside for the Academy (which has been criticized in recent years for the lack of diversity in their nominations) to nominate a historic movie like Wonder Woman.

It's not just the invitations to DCEU actors. actress, and directors. It's also invitations to Star Wars and Star Trek and other sci-fi, fantasy, and CBM franchises.
The biggest obstacle to CBMs getting Oscar nominations in major categories in the past (The Dark Knight is still the only CBM ever that has gotten an Oscar nomination in a major category) has been the attitude by the Academy that CBMs aren't worthy of Oscar nominations. But these invitations to DCEU as well as other sci-fi, fantasy, and CBM franchises could mean a possible change in attitude by the Academy to recognize that sci-fi, fantasy, and CBM franchises are an important part of the industry (and in the case of Wonder Woman, potentially have a large and lasting impact on the industry).
So these invitations could be a signal that the Academy is ready to nominate a CBM. The Golden Globes last year nominated a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever (Deadpool, although that was for a Comedy category) so Academy may be ready this year to nominate a CBM for Best Picture for the 1st time ever. The Academy likes movies that are historic, and this year there just happens to be a historic CBM, Wonder Woman, that potentially could have a large and lasting impact on the industry.

Actors, actresses and directors who do not ONLY work on SCEU, MCU, Star Wars and Star Trek Fims. Why should they have any special voting loyalty for them? The Academy already has a huge amount of people that have appeared and worked in CBMs...never made any difference Best Supporting Actor one of the major Awards? Dick Tracy got a nomination for that. Six other nominations as well. Including 3 wins. Before Dark knight. (I predict the that was a comic strip not comic book argument...it don't hold) Individuals are given memberships..not franchises Not really. And it only increases Wonder Woman's chances if the new members think Wonder Woman is good deserves to win an Oscar. All it is is 775 more members whose vote you can't, and is way to early to, predict, added to an existing group of people whose vote you can't, and is way to early to, predict. Studios haven't even released most of their Oscar hopefuls yet.

Becoming a member of the Academy doesn't guarantee Wonder Woman is going to score big time at the Oscars. That's not how it works.

Superman (1979)(Best Visual Affects) Batman (1989)(Best Art Direction - Set Decoration0 Dick Tracy (1990)(Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Makeup, Best Music, Original Song) Men In Black (1997)(Best Makeup) Spider-Man 2 (2004)(Best Achievement in Visual Effects) The Dark Knight (2008)(Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Achievement in Sound Editing) There were actually 6 comic-book movies that won Oscar. I have them listed above. The real question is why the MCU hasn't won any.

As for why MCU hasn't won an Oscar yet, even in a minor category, it's because MCU makes crappy movies and MCU movies are for kids.

No kidding. Its just a big circlejerk where they vote as contrarian to what's ACTUALLY hailed as the best film of the year by audiences in some egotistical bid to show how "refined" they are. They never give filmmakers, actors, or writers the "Best ()" award when they actually deserve it. Several filmmakers who changed the way we look at and make movies with their work never saw a single win for their trouble, outside of the box office and general adoration of the public.

Though MCU have had 9 nominations - about 1 for every 1 and a half movies. DECEU - 1. 1 for every 3 movies MCU might in your opinion make crappy movies, but they at least have better special FX than DCEU - 7 nominations in that category compared to DCEU's zero.

MCU bucks the Trend and doesn't go for "grounded" moviemaking. The Academy doesn't like that.
