An American in Paris (1951) is a wonderful film. I also like Gigi (1958) and The L-Shaped Room (1962).

Lili (1953)"Members of a circus troupe "adopt" Lili Daurier when she finds herself stranded in a strange town. The magician who first comes to her rescue already has romantic entanglements and thinks of her as a little girl. Who can she turn to but the puppets, singing to them her troubles, forgetting that there are puppeteers. A crowd gathers around Lili as she sings. The circus has a new act. She now has a job. Will she get her heart's desire? " Why this seems to be a forgotten film is beyond me. It's just terrific. Based on a Story by Paul Gallico It's another one of those "forever films" from 1953. One of my "magic years' movie-wise. and look at the trivia I just now gleaned from IMDb-V01 The earliest known appearance of the "smiley" emoticon, :-), was in an ad for this film in the New York Herald Tribune on 10 March 1953, page 20, columns 4-6. The film opened nationwide, and this ad possibly ran in many newspapers. It read: Today You'll laugh :-) You'll cry :-( You'll love <3 'Lili'" This should not be confused with the graphical yellow "smiley face", which was first drawn by Harvey Ball some 10 years later.

spiderwort There was a wonderful Broadway Musical Version as well Carnival (1961) Anna Marie Alberghetti played Lili (Leslie Caron) Jerry Orbach (yes, That Jerry Orbach) was the puppeteer (Mel Ferrer) and James Mitchel, Kaye Ballard and Pierre Olaf were in it. New songs. REALLY really good. I have the "original cast recording" which shall be dusted off and played asap !

Very charming personality. Caught her on TCM when they aired both Lili and Father Goose.

spiderwortI shall have to watch for the Burstyn episode. I missed it. I watch the re-runs on Monday night on one of the "buy this prescription medicine" channels. I noticed that Brad Dourif's (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) daughter was in this episode. Thanks for the recommend.

I am watching The L Shaped Room and I think it is her best performance. She is lovely in it. The whole film is fantastic! Completely agree. And I think it's probably her favorite, too, per her comments in the documentary about her that I saw on TCM. It was certainly the film that put her on the map as a "serious" actress (not that those of us who admire her didn't always know that). Found an interview with Leslie Caron on Youtube from BFI where she talks about this movie, it's about 22 minutes long. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlFaQ8D-ObkThat maybe is interesting for those who have seen this movie.
