Honestly I think that would be really cool if he was. From what I heard it sounds like he actually is the mummy. Also if he isn't then why cast someone like Tom to be in the start of the universal monster movie universe?

The only reason people think he's van helsing is because at one point he was attached to play him in a reboot which doesen't appear to be happening. Supposedly there is a rumor that he has a curse in the movie and he is the mummy.

I thought they were going to use a female mummy as the baddie and Cruise as an Rick O'Connell like character.

This rumor must have started because of his character coming back to life after the plane crash in the preview. My understanding is that the gal who played Samuel L. Jackson's henchwoman in Kingsman: The Secret Service plays the actual mummy while Tom Cruise plays the immortal hero.

Sort of going back to Karl off being their Egyptian expert in the 30s version?

I'll spoil this for you because the movie sucked.
At the end of the movie he is cursed with the spell of the Mummy. And he's gonna stay cursed forever because there's no way this movie is getting a sequel. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but its chock full of sins.
