I just watched Diary of the Dead with a friend of mine. I figure I'll buy Day of The Dead while we're at at.

Night of the Living Dead 1968 is the best, & the original Romero, it should be watched first, & its available free on youtube & everywhere else. Dawn of the Dead is absolutely one of the best sequels i think were ever going to get to a zombie movie.

Dawn is my favorite, followed closely by the original Night.

Nothing beats the original. I remember I had nightmares after my first viewing. It was kinda like unsolved mysteries segment were it actually happened, but the cause of the dead rising was left a mystery.

I have to pick Night, but Dawn is right on its heels.

Why not just watch all of them in order? Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn of The Dead, Day of The Dead, Land Of The Dead, Diary Of The Dead, and Survival Of The Dead.
I'd also check out the remakes of Night and Dawn, they're pretty good. I'd also watch the original Return Of The Living Dead. It's a spin-off, not a sequel (although it works as one to Night if you pretend to watch it as such), but it's excellent and my personal favorite zombie film of all time and a lot of other people's.

The order they happen isn't that order though. Diary of The Dead happened before and during Night of The Living Dead. I wondered if the movies were even cannon to each other until I heard the newscaster from the first movie. Which is really weird. I watched Day of The Dead today. I really enjoyed it and it felt like a different take on zombie movies. I never seen anyone try to experiment on zombies before. Well I guess they had the one chained up too in 28 Days Later.

For years, 'Night of the Living Dead' has been my very favorite horror film.

Night is one of the best horror movies ever made. A near perfect film. Dawn is a brilliant movie and was my favourite for years. But now i think I love day the most. It gets better each time I watch it.

I don't think so... I always saw Diary as a complete re-start of the series as it clearly takes place in modern times while NOTLD clearly took place in the sixties (which makes sense, since it was filmed in the 60's.) I don't remember the newscaster from the first film being heard anywhere, although it's admittedly been years since I've seen the film.

The original is the best. Dawn comes close though.

Dawn of the Dead is my favorite. It did what the original did (gore, zombies, trapped in one location, social commentary) and bumped it up.

I just watched Diary of the Dead with a friend of mine. I figure I'll buy Day of The Dead while we're at at. Definitely for me is Night of the Living Dead 1968 which was the one I voted for here ( just can't go wrong with the original ) . It is after all the film that started this all up that lead to these other awesome sequels & remakes too - IMPO . Actor Duane Jones as Ben was just excellent in this also . Also a creepy fun & memorable popcorn flick to watch anytime as well . Thanks so much MooseNugget for your subject post .

That's an excellent one also coldenhaulfield that film was Dawn of the Dead 2004 and my second favorite of mine too ( next to of course the original " Night of the Living Dead " from 1968 ) . I also like the movie poster for this one on Wikipedia - mysteriously creepy .

Surprisingly I actually have never seen this original version of Dawn of the Dead 1978 . How I missed out on that one I will never know . I have only seen the 2004 version and that's the one I thought you meant when you mentioned " the one in the mall " here . Well there's no need to be sorry coldenhaulfield - no harm done here either . Also either way whether these films are " Romero-made or based on " all these movie sequels and remakes ( especially the ones I haven't seen - yet ) I know will be all good - IMPO .

Yeah, that must be it -- the original Dawn of the Dead, although you're right that the remake owes a huge debt to the Romero movies. The one thing I remember disliking in the 2004 version, incidentally, was how the zombies ran super fast as opposed to the classic "lurching" of the Romero-era zombie flicks. Anyway, thanks for helping me sort it out!

Dawn of the Dead (1978). The remake was trash.
