Obviously not being serious, but.... what's the point of making movies with any of these things any more? They've all been done a million times over. There's virtually nothing more to be done with them that can be seen to be fresh.

Disagree. Every so often something comes out like we've never seen before, like The Raid 2's mass prison brawl or the Fury Road chases. And even if something is unoriginal, it doesn't matter - it's all in the execution.

For some reason, I'm picturing a dog standing on its hind legs, paw placed on his chest, proclaiming in an upper-class British accent: "He doesn't get that from MY side of the family." Why is it, do you reckon, that I always have this particular thought? Yes, I'm asking YOU in particular.

You can still get some thrilling action sequences. It all down to how they are executed (and to an extent how they fit into the story - would Fury Road be as thrilling if you didn't care for some of the characters?).
For a time it seemed film makers thought that when it came to stunts bigger was better (F&F kind of subscribes still to this). In the 80's it seemed that a film always came along that boasted a higher fall or a longer jump than a previous film. That mindset seems to have gone now which is good - there were some falls in The Raid that were only 1 storey that were more exciting than some of the ones in older films from the top of tall buildings.
Great fight sequences still crop up - The Raid films, the corridor scenes in Oldboy and Daredevil TV series, John Wick, even Statham in the first couple of Transporter films.

They're like big boobs on a woman. They aren't the defining aspect, they can't make up for an otherwise unattractive product, and ultimately they're not necessary, but on the right one they can be wonderful.

Not true at all. Didn't you see Mad Max Fury Road?

Probably something to do with the fact that you asked the very same question to sostie, JHA Durant, SoFarDown, dagwood and Bat Outtaheck. Talking dog fetish, much?

Disagree completely. I'm one of those people who doesn't understand why they don't give out Oscars for stunt work.

Disagree completely. I'm one of those people who doesn't understand why they don't give out Oscars for stunt work. They should for choreography, or 2nd unit directing, but actual stunts might create a situation where people are trying to outdo each other and put lives in danger. There are the Taurus awards now for film stunts

Or perhaps it's because I'm too a social introvert? I wonder if you (or, indeed, myself) have ever sat down and pondered such a riveting, zingy and tantalising question?

Because for every dozen hack directors that bring nothing to shooting an action scene, the one that looks great is worth it.
