I thought I'd start a thread similar to the ones you see on film boards, to remember people in music. Please feel free to share any thoughts or information you'd like to share.
“One of the first signs of the beginning of understanding is the wish to die. This life appears unbearable, another unattainable. One is no longer ashamed of wanting to die; one asks to be moved from the old cell, which one hates, to a new one, which one willl only in time come to hate. In this there is also a residue of belief that during the move the master will chance to come along the corridor, look at the prisoner and say: "This man is not to be locked up again, He is to come with me.”
- Franz Kafka

Pianist Horace Parlan has died at the age of 86. Originally hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I believe he'd been living in Europe for decades.
According to a statement released online by Jazz Promo Services :
'Horace Parlan died yesterday evening – February 23rd – peacefully in his sleep. A few blood clots ended his life at the nursing home where he spent his last couple of years. Here in Denmark we will remember him as a very sweet and embracing person that always had something to say in music. Among his latest albums I especially treasure his solo album “Voyage of Discovery” (1999), “Relaxin’ with Horace” with Ed Thigpen and Jesper Lundgaard (2003) and “My Little Brown Book” with Christina von Bülow (as) and Jesper Lundgaard.
All the best Frank Büchmann-Møller'

Boy, I initially thought your thread was brilliant. A clever dig at the state of music.
In Memoriam: Music
That's your thread title and, yes, music has officially died. That's what I thought you were going for. To be honest, that thread would have been better than your listing of dead musicians.

Musician Don Markham has died aged 85.
"Like Clarence Clemons, Markham could play a lot more than he let on. I remember him with the trumpet."
- Toby Canfield
“It seemed like in Bakersfield not a lot was going on with what I played in pop and jazz. The country people were so much nicer and appreciative of you playing for them than other kinds of music that I just fell in love with it.”
- Don Markham

Singer-songwriter Valerie Carter, with the smoky, resonant voice and inquisitive pen, has passed away at the age of 64.
"Valerie Carter's first break came while living with her family in Tucson, where she joined a band fronted by Gretchen Ronstadt, sister of Linda Ronstadt. Next she was off to New York City where she formed the folk band Howdy Moon. They headed to California, released a self-titled album in 1974 and regularly played at the West Hollywood rock club, the Troubadour. It was also during the 1970s she became known as a songwriter, penning tunes such as Cook With Honey for Judy Collins and Love Needs a Heart for Jackson Browne."
- Paul Guzzo, Tampa Bay Times
"The inimitable Valerie Carter is no longer with us. The first time I heard her all I wanted was to sing like THAT. And I tried, but no one ever will. Love you, Val."
- Shawn Colvin
"For sure it's a mystery but Valerie was an old soul and as deep as a well. Her voice came from her life and her life was a steep, rocky road."
- James Taylor
"... Valerie Carter, who took the off-ramp from the diamond lane."
- Van Dyke Parks
Thanks for the music.
Valerie Carter Rest in Peace

Yeah, its going to be sad now whenever that episode is shown and not just because of him being gone, but because of his preference being what it was. D.J. and Stephanie wouldn't have had a chance one way or another. God bless you and every female that he misled always!!! Holly

Robbie Hoddinott, one of the founding members of Bay Area rock band Kingfish, has died at the age of 62. Hoddinott was a tremendous guitar player with fluid fingering; check out the band's Winterland Ballroom concert in San Francisco from the mid-1970s to see him in action.
Flautist Dave Valentin has died aged 64 following a long period of illness. Hailing from South Bronx, Valentin put the American smooth in latin jazz.
Fred Weintraub has died aged 88. Born and raised in the Bronx, Weintraub was the original owner and host of legendary New York club The Bitter End. Comedians like Cheech & Chong, Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin, Wavy Gravy, George Carlin and Gilbert Gottfried have performed there. A diverse array of musical talent has also graced the Bitter End, from seasoned folkies Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, to playful ivory-tinklers Charles Aznavour and Lady Gaga.

Singer-songwriter David Peel has died at the of 73. A gifted satirist with a sardonic smile, Peel was signed to Elektra Records in the late 1960s when their output was quite extraordinary. Like the MC5 and the Stooges, he'd been courted by Danny Fields. 'God' - David Peel & The Lower East SideSinger Rosie Hamlin of girl group Rosie And The Originals has died at the age of 71. They totally killed it with cruisin' oldies like 'Angel Baby' (one of John Lennon's favourite records, check out the b-side 'I'm So Young') and the nostalgic bliss of 'I Found A Dream'. Singer Vera Spinarova has died at the age of 65. Spinarova lived up to her name, casting spiral spinners on spinning vinyl with circular rhythms. She almost moved into film, auditioning for Vaclav Vorlicek in the early 1970s, but remained in music where she achieved great success. She cut some tremendous records with crack house bands. Singer Brenda Jones, of Michigan-based sister act The Jones Girls, has died at the age of 62. The three sisters also performed as backing singers to Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and Linda Clifford. Raging Slab guitarist Elyse Steinman has passed away following a long period of illness. She was a demon on the electric, an angel on acoustic. Thanks for the music. Rest in Peace
