It should have been an up-and-comer with potential talent who has something to prove.

I’d still stick with Bird. He would’ve been perfect.

I'd like to have seen the other Rian Johnson given a chance. i.e. The one listed who isn't the guy who directed TLJ.

All men. Once again, so much for Disney's diversity PR stunt.

I'll go with Spielberg. I've always heard that he was George Lucas first choice for Return of the Jedi but couldn't direct it because Lucas had departed from Director's Guild of America. That being said, TFA is the my favorite of the sequel trilogy and I don't think JJ did a bad job.

I wouldn't mind seeing Rian Johnson's if he was allowed to direct/write the entire trilogy. While I don't like TLJ, it's more about how out of place it feels when put in the middle of the TFA and RoS.

Having said that, while I'd have been happy to have seen JJ direct - but definitely NOT write - the full trilogy (always thought TFA looked the part, especially in comparison to the prequels), I wouldn't have been too happy with Rian Johnson getting the same chance. I always think of the ironing scene. It's just unbelievable that someone would get a chance to make a Star Wars film but would then spoof the franchise within an actual installment of it. What was he thinking...

He's not listed, but Filoni might actually be my pick at the moment. It'd have the superior Prequel-era storytelling with the solid filmmaking (I know it's a show, but it's pretty cinematic) we saw in the Mandalorian.

A lot of those directors would have been great, but the problem was always writing and planning in terms of the sequel trilogy. If one of these directors had been allowed to direct and command the whole trilogy, we could have gotten something truly interesting at the very least.

I think Abrams was the right choice. He probably did a perfect job for what he had to work with. The subject matter i mean.
