These are the potential directors that Disney wanted to get for TFA.
I'm sure there were others in consideration and I'm sure there are others who would fit the bill better than some here, but this is exclusive to who could've realistically been picked if Abrams backed out.
Think of it as an alternate reality. Who would've made the best Star Wars movie?
For instance, we all love Christopher Nolan and he's a great director, but could he have made a good Star Wars film? Or what about del Toro?
One more thing, the story would be different depending on the director. So in other words, this wouldn't be Spielberg's or Nolan's or Bird's or Vaughn's or whoever's take on the same TFA script that Abrams made. The script and story would be made by the respective director.
Vote and discuss.

My vote goes to Spielberg. Though admittedly, it has more to do with my personal curiosity of how he would approach the project.

JJ's directing was actually fine, they just needed a better script, maybe one he did not write

Any of these guys could've made something good and more original. But I wouldn't have minded seeing what Del Torro would've made if he was given the reins to TFA. No doubt it would've been better than what Abrams came up with.

Matt Reeves!
He is the talented link to JarJar the Hack Abrams. I always thougt that JJ is lame but that Gozilla movie of his is kind of kewl coming from him: no it's really from Reeves. He also made Let Me In and the new glorious Apes movies.
He is the only wunderwuzzi who could have saved this POS by giving it his vision and dignity. It wasn't meant to be though.
History thou can be so cruel.

JJ was fine for a first episode (not so much a final one) but a soft reboot of ANH wasn't exactly what I wanted. I think Del Toro would have been interesting.
