Firstly, the writers, producers (Brannon and Braga) etc just didn't anticipate that churning out more of the same (as they did with the first two seasons) would simply never be good enough. They assumed that the fanboys would come flocking no matter what and unthinkingly tolerate such repetitive, derivative, unoriginal crap.
So we have two seasons of pure anus gravy. Episode after episode regurgitating TNG scripts where Trip is trapped on a planet with an alien, Reed and Mayweather are trapped on an asteroid, Reed and Archer are trapped on the ship's hull, Reed and Trip are trapped in a shuttle craft, Trip and Archer are trapped on a prison ship, Mayweather and Archer are trapped in an internment camp, Archer and Trip trapped on desert planet, crew trapped in catwalk...
Utter, utter garbage.
Season three arrives and finally they've decided to pull their finger out (though it's probably already too late) and we get the much more original Xindi arc. As much as I appreciate the attempt to finally do something unique, the truth is, the arc is actually quite tedious and repetitive. They've upped the action (both fist fights and space battles) but there's no soul to the damn thing. It's all just a lot of noise and flashing lights masquerading as something interesting and on closer inspection, very little of it makes sense.
An alien turns up and tells you to destroy a planet? Um... okay, if you say so. We totally believe you.
Oh and remember to attack them with a prototype first, alerting them to the impending danger (that makes much more sense than creating the finished weapon and, without them knowing anything about it, destroying the whole planet.
Then we have Earth's response. We've been attacked and 7 million people were slaughtered so let's send.... yeah, let's send... one fucking ship. Screw sending the rest of Starfleet, screw asking the Vulcans for help... let's just send Enterprise. That should sort things out.
Then we arrive at season four which is just a ton of desperate fan-wank thrown at the screen during the shows final death throes. Some of it is cute but mostly it's lazy, panicked, last minute nonsense.
