Canada claims the first victory of the tourney, but not without a scare. Three-nothing up in the second half, they were presented with a two-goal French Guianan comeback with rapid-fire goals on '69 and '70 for two-three (not bad for representatives of a place considered a mere 'department' of the world) But Alphonso Davies potted his second of the game to give Canada the 4-2 win and get them off to a flyer. Currently it's nothing-all between Costa Rica and Honduras, with twenty minutes gone. But it's late here on the opposing side of the world and I will find out the result in the morning at a less ungodly hour. But I'm expecting a Costa Rican win.

Costa Rica 1 Honduras 0. And in group B, the USA was held by Panama 1-1 in the baking Tennessee heat and Martinique defeated Nicaragua 2-0 to go top of the group.

That is not even a country! Yeah, it makes you wonder a bit. Like Guyana, Martinique is but an overseas region, or 'department', of France.

In Group C Mexico overcame outsiders El Salvador in the searing Californian heat. El Salvador were right back in it when they equalized on '10 but defending Gold Cup champions Mexico romped home 3-1. With coach Osorio watching on from the stands (following his six match touchline ban for the "motherf***er" pitchside outburst in the Confed Cup versus New Zealand recently) his youthful side came up with the goods and dispatched El Salvador with all the subtlety of a Donald Trump handshake, and justified Mexico's pole position in the pre-tournament betting book. Two second half pots ensured victory for Jamaica against Curacao, also played in the San Diego heat. Mexico 3 El Salvador 1 Jamaica 2 Curacao 0

Come to think of it, I think French possessions in the Pacific like Tahiti and Nouvelle-Caledonie are also FIFA members. The Gold Cup must have increased the number of participants - I never followed it very closely, but I don't think in the past it ever included teams like Curacao, Martinique or French Guyana. *** EDIT *** I looked it up and I was wrong. It has been a 12-team tournament since at least 2003.

First two semi-finalists have arrived with Costa Rica seeing off Panama one-nothing in their quarter-final, and the USA defeating El Salvador in a game of biting and apparent nipple pulling (Romero on Altidore) which saw the Americans turn in a patchy performance, it has to be said, against opposition that was not without its scoring opportunities. But it was a win all the same. Gonzalez got the first and Lichaj the second. Not a pretty game, but who wants prettiness over a pit bull encounter like this?
First semi : USA v Costa Rica
Next up, the remaining two Quarters involving Jamaica (19/10) v Canada (8/5) and Mexico (4/7) v Honduras (11/2)
