OK, fair enough. Yeah, at the time maybe what Eddie was doing was taking guitar driven music to a whole different level. But come on, the guy never progressed from "Eruption." Oh, wow, he used a drill on "Poundcake." Yeah, that's really progressing musically. And to be honest, I always felt Alex was the more interesting musician. Alex is far better at what he does than Eddie is at what Eddie does. Eddie has something called a "brown sound." Sorry, I don't hear it. But Alex's drum sound is so distinct. He has a sound that is his own. His snare in particular is a sound only Alex gets. Alex is the better of the two brothers. Looks like we disagree again. Haha. Alex is not an impressive drummer, let alone an "interesting musician." He shines a bit on Outta Love Again, but I wonder if that's even him. And why did he leave the stick click in the intro to Hot for Teacher? It would have been nothing to stop and say, "Whoops! Let's start that again." lol As far as musicianship goes, Alex is definitely the weak link in VH. Alex "the weak link" musically in Van Halen??? Ever hear of Michael Anthony or Wolfie or Gary Cherone? Eddie was a one trick pony. Anybody whoever picked up a guitar knows that. Alex does have something called "a sound." And for a drummer to have a particular sound is quite unique. Bonham, Ringo, and Phil Collins are the only others I can think of.

Wolfgang doesn't count, and although I really like Cherone - he's a great showman - he was not a good fit for VH. And besides, VH III is the second worst album in the entire VH discography, just behind A Different Kind of Truth. While Anthony may not be the best bass player in the world, he's miles above Alex in the musicianship department. Terry Bozzio and Gavin Harrison come to mind for drummers with their own unique styles. Not sure how you figure Ringo fits into there, though. lol

Ringo's fills in that tune - his fills are a part of his signature sound - are incredible. Also, Ringo always monkeyed with his snare (a towel over it) and his bass drum (a sweater inside it) to create his personal sound. I can recognize Ringo's sound in an instant. Eddie Van Halen's I can't. I can walk into a Guitar Center right now and hear seven different 13 year old boys sounding exactly like Eddie.
