"Horror has found a new home!"Roger Cobb (William Katt) is one of the most popular horror writers in America, but behind the stardom lies a rather tragic lifestyle, which is the result of having lost his son and a failed marriage. And in the big money business, there's no place or time to mourn, as both fans and publishers crave for something new, while Roger on the other hand, plans on doing something of a more personal matter, which just happens to be about his own experiences during the Vietnam war. Which is easier said than done, as he suffers from a serious writer's block. But with the recent news that his old beloved aunt has just killed herself, Roger decides to move into her old mansion where he once grew up, to maybe get some new and fresh ideas for his upcoming book, but also to learn more about his late aunt and what secrets the house has in store for him.House is a great and very fun midnight flick/adventure with a excellent cast including from William Katt, George Wendt, Richard Moll and Kay Lenz. I guess it is more of a horror-comedy/adventure than a scary film, and I found it strange how all the Scandinavian DVDs of House and House II came with a sticker which said: "Finally the uncut version on DVD released for the first time!", not sure what was seen as so "shocking" that it had to be cut out, the first time, but I guess cencors back in the 80s just was cutting away at everything, or nothing. Directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part 2 and 3) and produced by Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) they went along with Harry Manfredini (big surprise, also several of the Friday the 13th films) to make one of the most enjoyable haunted house adventures of the 80s, with House in 1986. The second one is almost as good as the first one, probably a bit more adventure/comedy thrown in, but I like them both, as the "third" one, I have already made a thread about, and I have a Scandinavian DVD which reads: House III: The Horror Show (1989) and then later on a fourth film came out, but I have not seen that one, yet. Anyway, House is one of the best late night summer films I know of, and I am planning on taking a summer marathon of all my favorite summer-horror films the next few weeks, starting with this one later this night:

I agree. My grandmother lived in a big, old mansion, several miles away from us, and specially during summer, I loved visiting her, but the house was at times very spooky, with lots weird noises suddenly coming "alive", and at night I sometimes tried to sneak up and watch old movies by myself, and she had all these chilling, black and white pictures on the wall, and the more I stared at them, the more I felt their eyes moved. I kind of miss that time, as I had a lot of fun staying at that house, and one of them was watching horror movies, late at night all alone. Some of the first slasher films I witnessed, was there, and the feeling of being all on my own, in a big, old house, helped create a very spooky kind of tone, which made some of the films, even more scarier than they actually were.

5/10 I never really liked it but like I said with The Stuff the effects are pretty cool. I guess thats why I prefer 70 and 80s horror films to todays.

Love it. And I even have a soft spot for the sequel. Funny that each features a Cheers alumnus.

They're a lot of fun! I was always surprised to meet horror fans who missed this series. Agreed on II being the strongest of the series, just ahead of the original.
Then again there's this, from Part IV which is awesomely funny and is the image I think of when I remember this series.

Watched it in October 2015.
Good movie with some great old-school effects and that inescapable 80s charm.

Can't say I liked it. It's like the movie can't decide on its tone. It's not funny or scary.
