I didn't have a high school psychology class, but as a young dude learning how to get angry, rebel, and make stupid impulsive decisions, I would have appreciated seeing "Bad Boys" (the one with Sean Penn in a boys' prison). Saw it in college...very good film (not without its problems/tropes/stereotypes) about the obstacles on the transition to manhood from boyhood.
Parts of it are crude, but they really break down the traditional male archetype and explore its motivations through a character who is too young to really understand the gravity of his decisions. Highly underrated movie in my opinion. Sean Penn shines in this.

Teaching psychology in high school? Is this real life? Not to get off topic, but psychology is showing up more in American public schools to educate a young populace that is getting used to the isolation of being online all the time. It serves a similar purpose as history class...showing people how to be people properly. Though that was called 'recess' before I had wrinkly old balls, I have wrinkly old balls now and here we are. Don't know how I feel about the whole thing, but we are in uncharted territory with the whole internet thing regarding kids who can see the wonders and horrors of the internet before they learn how to ask a chick out. (^that is not meant to be offensive to anyone. Read it as if some idiot at a truck stop is saying this between taquitos. You won't be far off.)

That's a broad topic. What would be the intent of showing them?

cinemafan97 What would be the lesson plan for each of your chosen required films? What is the class supposed to be learning from these particular films? A Clockwork Orange Taxi Driver John Carpenter's Halloween The Last American Virgin Fast Times at Ridgemont High Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street The Breakfast Club Rain Man The Silence of the Lambs American History X

I was in 8th grade when Ordinary People was in theaters. Our teacher took the class on a field trip to see Ordinary People in the theater.

No, but I remember that since the movie was rated R, each student had to have a signed permission slip from their parents to go on the field trip.

A Clockwork Orange Taxi Driver John Carpenter's Halloween The Last American Virgin Fast Times at Ridgemont High Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street The Breakfast Club Rain Man The Silence of the Lambs American History X 1. A Clockwork Orange- this should be shown because this film shows what happens when you take away a criminal's free will. 2. Taxi Driver- This should be shown because it is a character study of a mentally deranged individual. 3. Halloween- This should be shown because it shows what can happen when a mental patient escapes. 4. The Last American Virgin- This should be shown because it is an excellent portrayal of jealousy, and it also shows why teenagers should never put their crushes on pedestals. 5. Fast times at Ridgemont High- This should be shown because it examines different high school students and what their lives are like. 6. A Nightmare on Elm Street- this should be shown to show the psychology of bad dreams. 7. The Breakfast Club- This should be shown because it deals with 4 teenage kids from different social statuses. 8. Rain Man- this should be shown because it deals with autism. 9. Silence of the lambs- this should be shown because it deals with serial killers. 10. American History X- this should be shown because it deals with racism.

Thanks for your reply, cinemafan97 I am a bit concerned about the Horror films being shown in a HS classroom setting. I feel that they just exploit the abnormal psychology for "thrills".
