It's July 10 (at least where I am) and that's the birthday of 1960s TV/Movie star Nick Adams. He's best remembered for his sizzling performance as Johnny Yuma in the smash TV show The Rebel. He starred in other cinematic masterpieces like Die, Monster, Die! and Monster Zero. Yet how many recall that before all that he was Andy Griffith's best screen buddy? I'm referring of course to the hilarious comedy No Time For Sergeants with Andy Griffith and Nick Adams. Don Knotts also appeared in No Time For Sergeants and went on to become neurotic Deputy Barney Fife. But what if it had gone differently? What if Nick Adams had been offered the role of Barney Fife? How would he do as that character? In my estimation Nick Adams would have demonstrated his comedic genius as the chief deputy of Mayberry. Who else could have been Barney Fife if Don Knotts had refused the role? Here are my choices: Frank Aletter (1926-2009): Best known for Bringing Up Buddy. He was a real genius. Steve Franken (1932-2012) was snobby rich kid Chatsworth Osborn Junior on the Dobie Gillis show: Roddy Mcdowall (1928-1998) would have added a bit of culture to Barney Fife:

For those who have no memory of Steve Franken, here he is on Bewitched:
Here he is with Peter Sellers (as the butler):

How about Donald O'Connor?

How about Donald O'Connor? It seems like a good choice. O'Connor was about the same height as Don Knotts or Nick Adams (1.69 m) and was an accomplished actor. He certainly did fine work in the Francis the Talking Mule series. Yes, he'd be great as Barney Fife.

Really deep religious thread you got here, dividavi. Who you got in mind for Goober? James Caan or Gene Hackman?
