Lets play a game called, "When Should a Franchise Have Stopped?"
Name a franchise that is OVER 3 films, a trilogy cannot count.
For example, "The Dark Knight Trilogy" doesn't count as a franchise or saga because it is a trilogy, not affiliated with other Batman films, and it stands alone.
What I'm looking for is a film series that is connected, and it's over 3 films. For example, The Rocky Saga, Star Wars, etc...
Name a Franchise, and name specifically THE FILM that went too far.
1. Fast and Furious Franchise. I think Furious 7 was the perfect ending. 2. Transformers. Should have stopped with part 3. I would have preferred it be a Shia LeBoeuf Trilogy and then went back to the drawing board to make a live action version of the Animated Movie. 3. Friday the 13th. I think Part IV was a perfect ending. Then, after the abysmal part 5, I didn't mind part 6 wrapping up the Tommy Jarvis trilogy (part 4-6) but it didn't end there. Then Jason Goes to Hell. Fine, it was too long, but end it. Then Freddy vs Jason and it keeps going. Jason X was ridiculous.

Highlander should have stopped after the first. It wasn't designed for a sequel.

Indiana Jones, Die Hard and the Bourne movies all should have stopped after the original trilogies. In fact they did stop, only to be resurrected for cash grabs many years later. The Dark Knight deserved a better final chapter; a third film was necessary but TDKR was total garbage that shat on the previous two films. So in that regard I wish they had stopped after TDK.

TDKR could have been better. It wasn't garbage, but in comparison to the first two, it wasn't good. However, as a stand alone film it was solid. As far as franchises, Die Hard was a great trilogy. I agree, the 4th and 5th were a bad idea.

It's silly but harmless compared to A Good Day to Die Hard or Jason Bourne which just felt unpleasant to sit through.

Jaws Friday 13th Nightmare On Elm Street Highlander
All gained nothing by having sequels (although F13 did give us Jason X, it's just a shame we had to wade through so much cack to get there, then again it wouldn't have made sense without the preceding cack)

Pirates of the Caribbean should've ended with 3.
It's still easy to think it can when one watches the third.

Indiana Jones - Stop at Last Crusade Terminator - Stop at Terminator 2 Alien - I like Alien 3, but maybe stopping at Aliens would have been best Die Hard - Stop at Die Hard 3

Franchise is broad term. It's inclusive of all formats. To me the batman franchise is ongoing and with it we have had different iterations of the same product. Series is a better term for something that never steps outside its own story.

They should have stopped the original Star Trek movies after the seventh one.

I don't really see what people hated so much about part 5. It didn't have Jason exactly but it had the equivalent to Jason, especially up to that point before he became supernatural zombie Jason.
I agree that the early films in the series had a spark the latter once had a real hard time finding. But i don't think theres a terribly big drop off from 4 to 5 to 6...even 7 is decent for what they did. I think 3 is actually one of the worst but that's due to 3D mostly...and piss poor character development. 1 and 2 are my faves at this point coming off a fresh rewatch.

Die Hard 3 was a fine stopping point. I havent seen the latest one but 4 was forgettable.
If the AVP movies count as Predator movies then they shouldve just stopped at Predator 2.

I agree with this. Indy IV wasn't a bad film. It just doesn't compare to the original trilogy. People judged it harshly. However, compared to other franchises making sequels 10-20 years later, it's the best.

Lets be honest most of them really................. I think The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Trilogy were fine. I would have preferred a 4 hour one off prequel (like the book) but it wasn't bad. Harry Potter as well.
