Regarding an SS2, they can definitely improve....in every way.
But when it comes to the director.....I'm feeling a decent "meh" towards it, not because I was holding a candle out for Gibson, but because Serra's films normally don't have an ounce of meat.....and this is coming from a fan of The Shallows.

Serra's an adequate director-for-hire, he's only as good as the script he's working from so if its a pretty solid one he'll do good.

I was pining for Mel Gibson to change his mind and give the superhero genre a try but this isn't bad.

I considered David Ayer a solid director. But the first Suicide Squad was only okay and somewhat enjoyable. But thats the studio dictating the the direction. If they can get a director that can make the movie the studio wants but also stick to his own vision then that would be the best outcome. That, or give a director absolute freedom and hope for the best.

Give the director freedom to do what he wants, but give some loose guidlines to make sure the movie fits in with the franchise.

They can't give him guidlines and expect an independant vision. It would be nice if they found a film maker that could find that balance. But it would be better to make stand alone movies and build the cinematic universe upon what each movie brings to the audience. Build from there and incorporate the changes that each chapter brings. Even the MCU doesnt do that because they are always building to a particular story. Let the progression of each story dictate how the universe unfolds.

Even the MCU doesnt do that because they are always building to a particular story. Let the progression of each story dictate how the universe unfolds. Well, what I was getting at was that the studio should lay down a few plot beats that should or should not be included in the movie. Maybe they want Harley Quinn to meet Nightwing so they have something to build off of in the next film. Maybe they want to show that the new Joker isn't a pushover like we all thought he was, so they want a scene where he kills his competitors with his bare hands. Maybe they don't want to show the new Bane quite yet, so they tell the director that he's off limits. The possibilities are endless. Then once those loose guidlines are put down, the director is free to make his own movie. It's not ideal creative liberty for the director, but it's the best we will get.
