In the old days a film was brought to the theatre by special delivery (special carrier) and was played on a film-projector like in school, only it was a larger projector. Do they play Blu-rays, Ultra HD DVDs or is it beamed to them via satellite?

Good question, one I'd often wondered about but never researched until you posed it. I'd assumed that in this age movies were something akin to an MP4 file or something the cinema would download. Google is our friend, found this article:
