"Spend the night with a madman."A young bookseller Virginia (Jenny Wright) have been taking a rather solid interest in the macabre work of the gothic novelist known as Malcolm Brand (Randall William Cook). But when she finds out that someone has sent her a brand new copy of Malcolm's latest novel, titled I, Madman, Virginia starts to grow an unhealthy obsession towards the book and it's characters, which is gonna be hard to try explain, when the novels main villain, Dr. Kessler suddenly begins to appear in real life, and so do the bodies he leaves behind. I, Madman aka Hardcover (1989) is directed by Tibor Takács who probably is better known for the more fun filled, fast-paced adventure/horror film, The Gate (1987), but this time he made a more mature kind of an adventure, that I was really impressed by, as it looks damn good with a more stylished, darker, gothic tone, at least compared to his The Gate films (yeah they made two of them) and I think it stands as one of the "lost" late 80s horror films and one that features the lovely Jenny Wright (Near Dark) in the main role and Randall William Cook as Dr. Alan Kessler/ Malcolm Brand. The only "complaint" I have with the film is the cheap looking stop-motion effects, you know the small demon looking creatures that Tibor seems to feature in most of his 80s/90s horror related films, and while they was fun to watch in The Gate movies, I was more annoyed seeing them her, as they pose of no threat and look ridiculous. Shout! Factory did release the film on both Blu-ray/DVD combo back in 2015, and it is really worth a watch, for those who enjoy a bit more slow-paced crime/suspense kind of horror films instead of just another typical slasher title. I promise, I will stop making more threads in the horror section at least for today, but since I did have the time on my hand, and I kind of enjoy creating topics/threads for movies I like/enjoy, so I hope nobody thinks I am just spamming the place down.

Been awhile since I last watched this one. Been meaning to pick it up. Jenny Wright's sprightly performance really does drive the gothic, fantasy story. There can never be enough individual movie threads.

Jenny Wright's sprightly performance
I wonder what happened to her career, as of that time during the late 80s/early 90s she seemed like a very promising young actress, with Near Dark, I, Madman, Young Guns II, A Shock to the System and The Lawnmower Man all done within a time frame between 1987-1992, and while maybe not all of them are to be considered great films, they were and still is, films that a lot people like to talk about and remember to this day, but after appearing in some TV episodes, here and there, after the mid 90s, it seems like she just suddenly stopped doing movies.

It's a very enjoyable breath of fresh air for an 80s horror film, showcasing an imaginative story and engaging stop motion effects by Randy Cook, who also delivers an effectively creepy performance as the films' villain.
I think Jenny Wright may have had a drug problem. From what I hear, she hasn't aged terribly well. She did do an interview for Shock Cinema magazine within the last few years.

That is sad to hear, as I did not know of her having such a problem.

I first saw this movie in 1990/91 when I happened upon it on some channel provided by my college cable package. I was a freshman, and I thought this film was utterly terrible, mostly due to the ridiculousness of it all. I remember well how stupid I thought it was, how stupid I thought the title was. But you know what, I never forgot it. If was a title that always stayed with me. A few years ago I decided to rent it from Netflix, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered.
I still think it's silly, but it's a kind of fun silly.
