The hardest sport to master in my opinion is road racing. Some that don't master it die, the isle of man and northwest races can be brutal. F1, MotoGP, Superbikes and Rallying i'd put before any ball sports. You've confused hardest with most dangerous. And I believe paragliding is more dangerous (although don't quote me on that).

I would say it depends how we measure it.
The hardest to become number 1 in the world I think is quite easy to answer. And that is football (that's soccer to our American friends). The reason is quite obvious, you sheer number of players who play it regularly from school age upwards all round the world make it statistically almost impossible to reach the status of 'best in the world'.
Hardest to become professional, that might be another answer as there are a lot of pro footballers. I suppose it is pretty hard to become a pro F1 driver, because there simply aren't many spots, but then there aren't many people who take up motor racing competitively. Answers on a post card.

Baseball is by far the most difficult. In college I had a buddy who later pitched in the minors. Dude could reach the low 90s with his fastball. You ever play catch with someone like that? Damn. Even going easy on me, I was afraid he was gonna take my head off.
Even in MLB it's obvious that talent at certain positions is at a premium. Only a handful of guys in the world can play positions like SS and catcher while also providing decent offense. Teams jizz themselves at the opportunity to get guys at those positions who can hit.
Also, MLB does not tolerate the sort of mental lapses you see every day in a sport like basketball. Somehow a guy like JR Smith gets away with giving up dunks so he can go high five a friend on the bench, but baseball teams do not have patients for players who forget counts, outs, or daydream in the field.
As for basketball, well, talent can carry you far even if you're an idiot who can't run plays or doesn't bother to defend.

I don't think so. It is incredibly difficult to ride a motorcycle at race pace and even harder on public roads rather than tracks. I've played most ball sports and got pretty good at them relatively quickly but i found racing, whether it be four wheel or two, a lot harder.

I dunno, I've driven my car pretty fast, and I completed Outrun at the Trocadero one summer, took a hell of a lot of 10p coins but I got there. Wonder if Lewis Hamilton ever managed that?
