This movie is getting rave reviews from even the moist cynical of reporters.
It is not a John Wayne/Lee Marvin movie about a hero. The big names, for what they're worth are in predictable roles. Tom Hardy as an RAF pilot, Kenneth Branagh as the officer in charge, Mark Rylance as a guy with a boat, Cillian Murphy as an anguished survivior and Harry Styles as a soldier on the beach and a guarantee of (pretty) bums on seats . No cliches and a minmum of dialogue No dying soldier handing his mate a letter to his sweetheart/mum as he goes down, no cavalry to the rescue. As Churchill put it " a colossal military disaster" and it was. It has been turned into a victory of sorts. 350000 soldiers were rescued, however ignominiously, to fight another day and they did....and they won !
The shock to me is that of all directors, Christopher Nolan was given the keys to Fort Knox and by all accounts hasn't wasted a penny of it.
Can't wait to see this.

I don't care much for Chris Nolan. Might be because I don't care much for comic book movies. Had no intention of seeing this. Got burned by Pearl Harbor. I am rather intrigued by the reviews.

I think we can safely say it's going to be better than Pearl Harbor. Christopher Nolan could film himself taking a dump and it would still be better than Pearl Harbor, and I'm not one of those easily pleased Nolan fanboys either.

I've only seen Memento by him. Didn't care for it. Do want to see Interstellar, maybe Inception.

This is a comedy, right? Movie about the greatest running away in history. Oh, man, I can't wait for the laughs. I bet one Brit slips on a banana peel as he runs away from the Nazis. Another Brit runs away so fast from the Nazis that he runs off the dock right into the sea. This is going to be great comedic stuff. I hope when they show the thousands of Brits are running away from the Nazis they play the Benny Hill music and run the film at fast speed. Can't wait for this comedy.

Hmm, I want to like this comment and disagree with it somewhat at the same time. As a sci-fi heist film, Inception is great. It has nowhere near the emotional stakes it thinks it has, I'll say that.

I hope there's a laugh track when Hitler decides to let them retreat back to England because he thinks that would be worse for morale than simply wiping out the army that lives on to fight another day (and eventually helps win the war).

Can't wait to see Nolan's take on a war film. I'm wondering how much (if any) war room stuff we're going to get or if it simply focuses on the action itself (trailers make it seem like the latter). The short run time is surprising, especially when you combine this director with the subject matter. I'm wearing a team England jersey, my wife will probably shy away from her team Germany apparel. It might send the wrong message.

Plots not lifted from a comic book. Obviously not. Nolan is one of the ten greatest Directors of all time. The Batman trilogy, The Prestige, Memento, Inception, Interstellar, etc. The man has made some great movies. In fact, every movie he has made craps all over Pearl Harbor.

That's a pretty lofty statement and one that I suspect you didn't think particularly hard about before making. Just off the top of my head I can name more than 10 directors I'd mention in a conversation for greatest directors before Nolan. Alfred Hitchcock Stanley Kubrick Akira Kurosawa Orson Welles Francis Ford Coppola Sergio Leone Martin Scorsese Paul Thomas Anderson Fritz Lang David Lynch John Ford Quentin Tarantino Steven Spielberg Oliver Stone And there are plenty I haven't mentioned. I mean, I love The Dark Knight, and Interstellar, Inception, Batman Begins, Memento, The Prestige are good movies and all. But... top 10 director of all time?

I'm definitely checking it out. I want to find one of the 70mm print IMAX screenings. I'm glad that Tarantino and Nolan are working to keep that format alive and push it forward.
I'm going into this optimistically, and I think it looks really strong. I like the cast a lot and the reviews are encouraging, but I've not been overly impressed with Christopher Nolan's movies. The only one that I really thought was superlative was Memento, and since then he's been making slightly better than average big budget Hollywood genre movies. For all his gifts with visual narrative and plot, his movies really suffer from some truly lame dialogue, thin-as-paper side characters, and painfully overt exposition.
Hoping this movie doesn't fall into that pattern.
