I think it's because she wasn't likable at all in TFA as a character, but Daisy Ridley is very likable in real life.
They botched that whole thing pretty good. I don't know how, but they did.
I feel a re-characterization in the making! Hopefully it's for the better.

I think it's because back during TFA toyline there was complaints about how rey didn't get much merchandise. I know there was a controversy surrounding a monopoly board that didn't have a rey character piece/token.

I hope every single toy of both Roy and Baby Oyt are confiscated and burned along with every copy of TFA in existence.

I think it's because DR can't even act her way off the world's slowest escalator.

The whole link is ridiculous and it's obvious they didn't do their research. There were/are Rey figurines for Episode 7: Rey will also be one of the first figures released for Episode 8.

The early merchandise for The Force Awakens didn't have much Rey products. Infact Kylo Ren had the most and was featured more, this was because Disney actually thought Kylo Ren was going to be the breakout character of the film, not Rey (LOL), so when a uproar started as soon as the film released Disney made more Rey merchandise and now she's the focus of the last jedi merchandise! Something similar happen to Black Widow with Age of Ultron.

Star Wars merchandise has always been like that: the bad guys always get way more coverage. i.e. Boba Fett, Vader, and Stormtroopers seem to be the characters on most of everything put out since the 90's. The Droids and Yoda are the good guys that usually make it too, but rarely will you see Luke Skywalker or Han Solo on merchandise unless it's toys. It used to really annoy me actually as Luke was always my favorite and I couldn't find him on anything cool. : / In terms of early Episode 7 merchandise, Rey was one of the first figurines released in Wave 1. Other than Stormtroopers, none of the other characters got more than one figurine during that time. You're right though about Kylo Ren. He did make up a majority of the marketing, but this idea that Rey wasn't a commodity in terms of merchandising is nonsense.

Not to play the gender card but this only caused a controversy because Rey a female character. Like you said, Han and Luke didn't get much, but no one complained about it. But since Rey is a woman it made for a easier outrage. Can't wait to see what they'll complain about for The Last Jedi!
