Looks stunning. McConaughey pulls off his magic again, this time as The Man in Black-Randall Flagg-Walter Padick. I will be making one of my few yearly trips to the theater for opening weekend. GoodMan, as a fellow King fan, who like you has read the entire series, I am going to try to put aside all the perceived notions that I have of Roland. I know you are a purist on this one and watching the trailer I was easily able to pick out several fundamental differences about Roland, so you may not enjoy this movie. Me, I am going in with an open mind. Nothing could ever ruin the books for me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQOTcmtFwNA

"I do not aim with my hand; He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye. I do not shoot with my hand; He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind. I do not kill with my gun; He who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my heart." Well, Steve King seem to like it. If he messes this up, he really has forgotten the face of his father. And as long as I remember its a SEQUEL. It's Roland's next trip, not the one from the books . It's scary though. TDK is my favorite piece of fiction, bar none. My sister finally finished the series last week after hearing me praise it forever. And she had the same reaction to the ending, "That was cold". The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed."

I just finished reading The Waste Lands and I keep waiting for this series to get good. Does it get any better than this? Because the first book flat out sucked, and the second one, while better, barely had anything happen. Third one was a plod as well. Should I bother with Wizard and Glass or just cut my losses here?

Never read the book despite a few of my friends raving about it when we were kids. The movie looks boring, to be honest.

You gave me goosebumps.

That depends on what you like in fiction. The Dark Tower is a whole King universe, it has a subtle part in most of his books. When I first read The Gunslinger I was skeptical, it was so different than the other King works. As I continued the series it drew me further and further into this universe, I felt a part of it. I have a very vivid imagination so while reading I can place myself right with the characters, King makes that easy for me. I know awards don't necessarily mean much, but the next book in the series Wizard and Glass is where sci-fi/fantasy fans started to recognize the excellence of the series. Give it a try.

Yeah, if you haven't got into it so far, you probably won't. Wizard and Glass resolves the cliffhanger in The Waste Lands then does a big turn with Roland's back story.

I generally like this TYPE of fiction / fantasy, and I am a fan of many of King's works, but these are just not grabbing me. They're like how I think of The Stand, which was like 1100 page that led up to the most anticlimactic ending in literature, coupled with a villain that was barely a villain. Except this is like 7 Stands worth of story. I may give W&G a try but I'm gonna take a break from this series. This may be a rare case where the movie is better than the book.
