...devastating. Absolutely devastating.
I know that some of the comic book films this year ended in sad notes, but those endings at least felt like noble sacrifices that made huge differences.
For this one, though, I want the ending to convey some feelings of hopelessness, in ways that the villain has been stopped, but at a terrible price.
And it CAN be done. Think of 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'.

I have heard something like that happens in Ragnarok. Although it does differ between characters such as Heimdall, Loki, Thor, and Odin.

You can hope all you want. But Marvel prove to be making films which are free of tragedy and almost completely inconsequential to the larger story arc. Oh and Thor and Loki survive. The creature of the week villains will be destroyed. Maybe. Thor's dad may kick the bucket and a bigger deal will be made out of that than ought to be.

So you're pissed they don't kill everyone and destroy the setting in every movie, check.

The only logical ending for Thor: Ragnarok is for Asgard to be completely destroyed. Whether it's because of the final struggle between Thor and Hela, or some soul-stone artifact, or maybe because Steppenwolf came and destr.... oh wait, wrong movie. =) Seriously though, I feel like it will be destroyed by Thanos and the Black Order, completely demolishing Asgard after Hela has already weakened it. Now, this may sound extreme but the more I think about it the more I'm convinced it's the only logical step for the MCU. It ties up a way too many loose ends to be ignored: 1. It means that the title "Thor: Ragarok" actually makes sense. 2. It explains why the GotG find Thor floating about in space in a bunch of debris. That's probably the remains of Asgard. 3. It would explain why Thor's Asgardian friends are not helping out in Infinity War. If Thanos really is threatening midgard with annihilation, you'd expect the entirety of Asgard to come out to help. This would be a good reason why they can't. 4. If this is truly Thor's last film, it would give him the proper exit from the MCU. Either he's still alive at the end of Infinity Wars and he has to go back and rebuild his home, finding all surviving Asgardians in the process. Or, he dies in Infinity Wars and this would explain why no Asgardians are dropping in on Earth anymore either seeking retribution for Thor's death or to take up his place as Midgard's protector.
