I'm starting to think that Avengers 4 will likely be based on the Secret Invasion storyline. They did mention that the title of the movie would be a spoiler. I'm curious how you think that would go down. Isn't it going to be the conclusion to Thanos? Why and how do you think Skrulls are somebody going to get involved?
I was thinking if they do Skrulls it would come after Thanos, not before.
It's just a hunch. They're already introducing the Skrulls in the Captain Marvel movie, and since the very next movie after that is Avengers 4, that seems like a possible scenario. I could of course be wrong on this, but if the sequel isn't going to be titled "Infinity War" I'd assume that the Infinity Gauntlet wouldn't really factor into the story all that much.

But why would the 4th Avenger film which is capping off everything they've been building up for 21 films, suddenly not have much to do with the Infinity Gauntlet and instead switch to a group of villains we only met the film before it. I've been wrong before, but how do you see that making any sense?

With Captain Marvel's announcement that Skrulls will be in that movie, there is almost no way to avoid the question of whether or not Secret Invasion has been going on this entire time. Even if the movie doesn't directly show a cliffhanger for it, the possibility will still be there.
So does anybody fit the bill for being a Skrull candidate right now?
- I'm going to go ahead and eliminate the possibility or either Iron Man or Captain America. They are far too personally motivated in everything they do to justify that it wasn't actually them. The same with Black Panther. Vision is also out on his unique abilities that aren't likely to have been copied. The same with Hulk. And Scarlett Witch.
- Thor however. This is a guy who is back and forth between worlds. It's all together possible that one of the times he showed up he wasn't actually Thor. - Black Widow is driven by duty, but she has been acting in a way that confuses the group as well. IDK, maybe. - Ant Man seems like the kind of guy to get impersonated. The only trouble here is, when did they get to him? Because it would have had to have been after his first solo film. - Falcon is a great candidate as well. He basically just follows Caps orders, and he was rather pushy to get to know him in the first place if you recall. - War Machine is a prime target as well for similar reasons. Get somebody next to Iron Man. - Hawkeye. Absolutely. He's been MIA a lot, and who knows if he's really him when he shows back up.
Aside from that, any other side character from Maria Hill to Pepper to the Shocker or the President could be in on it too.
What do you think? seeing as marvel is yet to miss a Beat, this will rock as has the whole MCU. I'm going to think about it a while and get back to you.

I figured they could perhaps tie Thanos into the film somehow, but perhaps not feature him as the active threat of the film. I'm asking just for clarity, but in the second film Thanos becomes a side villain? I was under the impression Thanos basically wins in the first film and the second film is about defeating him. I can't wrap my head around how making him less of a threat in the second film would make any logical sense.

Him winning the first film wouldn't seem to make much sense if the films aren't meant to be two-parters. They still have the Ant-Man sequel presumably taking place between that and Avengers 4. They just said that the second film is different than the first, but not that the storyline wouldn't carry on. The Ant-Man film being in between doesn't preclude that from happening really.
I don't really see how he gets his minions to get all of the gems, uses the gauntlet, and is stripped of it all in one film. Just think how long it's going to take for the scenes just collecting each of the gems. Ebony Maw has to confront Dr. Strange. Corvus Glave has to take down Vision. Somebody has to get the Power Stone from Knowhere. Xandar has to be destroyed. And that's if no more work has to be done to get the Soul Stone or the Tesseract from Asgard. On top of that you'll have all sorts of other character build going on for all of the main characters, and then Thanos has to do something extremely impressive with the Gauntlet. And they can't just defeat him. There has to be a lot of effort, strategy. IDK man. I'd bet the film ends with him using it.
But more importantly, how does ending the first 3 Phases with a Skrull invasion make sense to what they've built up? They won't even have been introduced until the film before that.
