A lesser-known favorite. Peter Finch as an upper-crust Labor Party MP who condescends to his working class constituents and maneuvers for a bigger role in the government while having various affairs.

A dirty dozen. I don’t think any of these have been suggested already.
Duck Soup / Leo McCarey. (1933) “Hail, Freedonia!” The House Of Rothschild / Alfred L. Werker (1934) Cardinal Richelieu / Rowland V. Lee (1935) In Old Chicago / Henry King (1937). Lot’s of politics and political manuvering before the town burns down The Great McGinty / Preston Sturges (1940) The Great Dictator / Charles Chaplin (1940) The Mortal Storm / Frank Borzage (1940) All The King’s Men / Robert Rossen (1949) Becket / Peter Glenville (1964) Blazing Saddles / Mel Brooks (1974). The Campaign / Jay Roach (2012). Almost tolerable modern political comedy. Viva La Libertà / Roberto Andò (2013). “Movies and politics are a lot alike. They both require bluff and genius and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.”

So many interesting and wonderful choices, mikef6 . A couple I don't know; most I love. Becket, The Great McGinty, and The Mortal Storm are particular favorites. Re: Viva La Libertà - which I haven't seen - is that quote from the film or the director? It's a great one, and oh so true! I think the quote is from the movie; I don't really remember. I used it to close my review of this film on the other boards whose name we do not say, so a character quote is likely. "Viva" was the second time I saw a film with Toni Servillo ("The Great Beauty" was the first). I need to watch both of those great films again. EDIT: I just re-read my own review more carefully. The quote, indeed, is from the movie. The character is a film director.

I remember being taken to the very political films of the mid1960's by my parents:
Fail Safe Dr. Strangelove The Best Man Advise and Comsent Seven Days in May
One of the first movies I remember seein was "On The Beach," which certainly has a political message.
I love the work of Aaron Sorkin. His "West Wing" gave us a look at what government could be. If you check out the film, "Enemy of the State" with Will Smith, you will discover that Sorkin did some script doctoring, as you will hear some very Sorkinesque dialog.

Many is already mentioned, so I might repeat some...
Gabriel Over the White House 1933, A political hack becomes President during the height of the Depression and undergoes a metamorphosis into an incorruptible statesman after a near-fatal accident. Walter Huston, Karen Morley, Franchot Tone
Washington Merry-Go-Round 1932, Button Gwinett Brown is a freshman congressman on a mission to rid Washington of corruption. Lee Tracy, Constance Cummings, Walter Connolly
Washington Story 1952, Van Johnson's character is a congressman. Reporter Alice Kingsly arrives in Washington D.C. determined to uncover a tabloid-worthy scandal. Van Johnson, Patricia Neal, Louis Calhern
State of the Union 1948, An industrialist is urged to run for President, but this requires uncomfortable compromises on both political and marital levels. Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Van Johnson
Le président / The President 1961, At 73, France's ex-president, Emile Beaufort, faces declining health, but he still plays a vigorous role behind the scenes as a philosopher and, potentially, as a power broker. Jean Gabin, Bernard Blier, Renée Faure.
Z 1969, Following the murder of a prominent leftist, an investigator tries to uncover the truth while government officials attempt to cover up their roles. Yves Montand, Irene Papas, Jean-Louis Trintignant
The Last Emperor 1987. The story of the final Emperor of China, forced abdication, Emperor marionette in Manchuria, prisoner in Maoist China. John Lone, Joan Chen, Peter O'Toole.
Mot nya tider / Towards New Times 1939. The story of how Norway and Sweden nearly started a civil war, but ended up separating and became two nations instead, ending the unionion that made Norway a part of Sweden in 1905. Victor Sjöström, Sigurd Wallén, Bengt Djurberg

Jackie The Queen Milk The Pelican Brief The Ides of March In the Name of the Father Sophie Scholl Nineteen Eighty- Four ( WHEN will they remake this one?!) The Iron Lady Great choices, Jillian. I don't know Sophie Scholl, but it looks very interesting! As for 1984, I would say the time is right, without question. Thanks! Yes, Sophie Scholl was a well made movie, but difficult to watch. Yeah, Olivia Wilde acts in the play, so hopefully a movie will follow suit very soon.

The Deal (2003) an early effort by Stephen Frears for TV in which Michael Sheen plays Tony Blair three years before doing the same in The Queen.
Hidden Agenda (1990) by Ken Loach. Halfway through I was thinking I was watching a generic thriller about the Northern Ireland Troubles, then I realized it was actually the story of the conspiracy which helped to bring Margaret Thatcher to power.
A Face in the Crowd (1957) Elia Kazan and other versions and clones. (Surprised this was not on spiderwort's list!)
Stalin (1992) Ivan Passer. TV film which tries to cover too much ground, but Robert Duvall is very good as our hero.
La Fiesta del Chivo (2005) Luis Llosa. About the assassination of Trujillo.
1911 (2011) Li Zhang, Jackie Chan. About the overthrow of the Chinese Imperial dynasty. Underwhelming for such a big theme. Maybe too many areas where they could cause offence?
Our Friends in the North (9 part UK TV series) 1996 Terrific series following the lives of four friends from the North-East of England through the decades. Local and national politics features strongly (along with their personal lives) and a couple of the characters become Members of Parliament. Only available as a Region 2 DVD set but does have subtitles (which you will probably need for the Geordie accents). The young leads have since graduated to leading roles in Hollywood movies.
Yes Minister (UK TV Series 1980–1984 22 episodes). Extremely funny and accurate depiction of the relationship between politicians and civil servants written by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn.
Yes Prime Minister (UK TV Series 1986–1987 16 episodes) The sequel and almost as good.
Wag the Dog (1997) Barry Levinson
Bob Roberts (1992) Tim Robbins
The President's Lady (1953) Henry Levin. Long time since I saw it but I do not remember too much politics in it.
Lee Daniels' The Butler (2013)
Silver City (2004) John Sayles
Path to War (2002) John Frankenheimer
The Gathering Storm (2002) Richard Loncraine. Churchill biopic but concentrates on his marriage. Albert Finney as Churchill.
The Gathering Storm (TV movie 1974) Richard Burton as Churchill. I have not seen this. Hopefully it goes into the politics more deeply.
The Ghost Writer 2010 Roman Polanski Watched this again the other night. I am a massive Polanski fan but cannot get into this. I think the problem for an English viewer is that all the "revelations" were well-known in England long before this came out. May work better for Americans?
Michael Collins (1996) Neil Jordan
The Devil's Double (2011) Lee Tamahori

Donlevy makes the most of his role of the political leader who fought his way up from the other side of the tracks. in the 1942 film The Glass Key. A tale of big-city political corruption , highlights but lightly skips over the corrupt political processes which are used merely background for the entertaining love story/whodunit aspects of Dashiell Hammett's novel...

1900 The Conformist
....in fact most Bertolucci stuff has a political point of view.
The Dismissal - a great Aussie TV mini-series about the events of 1975 when a democratically elected government was sacked through a quirk of the constitution. In many other countries of the world there would have been a civil war.
