These movies aren't big on kills, but still entertaining due mostly to Terry O'Quinn's great performances.

I love all 3! I have them on DVD. My husband transferred them from VHS to DVD for me.

I remember enjoying them tho' I don't think they needed to do a second one. Never saw the third one, I know the plot of it without looking it up but never thought it sounded interesting.

On Youtube too last time I checked (which is where I last watched them for the first time in years). I'm one of the few that enjoys the remake as well. Thought it was well done.

Joseph Ruben's 'The Stepfather' (1987) is a terrific horror movie. I'm not keen on Jeff Burr's sequel 'Stepfather 2' (1989); I prefer Nelson McCormick's remake 'The Stepfather' (2009) to the sequel.

The Stepfather never really needed a sequel. Stepfather II is quite bad is has a great ending at least.

That's right, The Stepfather (1987) wasn't big on kills; the emphasis was more on suspense, twists, and storytelling. And it delivers big time on all three counts. Violence only occurs when it is pertinent to the story. Terry O' Quinn was definitely the perfect choice and he gives a superb performance in this iconic role.
Seeing that sequels were completely unnecessary for The Stepfather, I've never seen any of them. And don't get me started on the remake, you couldn't even pay me to see it.

I think these influenced the 'Poison Ivy' movies if I'm correct?

Love those movies. Terry O'Quinn owned that role!

Yes, anyway, The Stepfather is an oft-overlooked minor classic. Definitely a different breed from other '80s slashers.
The second is worth watching if only to watch peak Meg Foster. Terry O'Quinn really leans into the insanity of the role, too (my favorite part and the scene that always cracks me up is when he listens to his Rice Krispies with a shit-eating grin). Not a complete waste of time; rather serviceable.
Never saw 3. Found the remake mediocre but inoffensive.

Haven't seen it for a while but of that I remember, it was a decent to good slasher/psychological late night thriller highlighted with a solid performance by Terry OQuinn and that is also featured Jill Schoelen from Phantom of the Opera (1989) and Popcorn (1991), which was also not that bad late 80s horror/slasher titles. My most fond memory of The Stepfather however was the upbeat and somewhat haunting end title by former Yes member Patrick Moraz:

I do like the contrasting nature between the first two films. The first plays on the dark, lingering psychological tension with outstanding performances, while the second ups the outlandishness almost steering closer to a slasher formula. Terry O’Quinn definitely holds it all together.

I love the first one. Terry O'Quinn is great in it. I saw this film for the first time when I was a kid, so it was really exciting at the time. You were just waiting for him to totally snap and when it happend, my little kid heart was beating bit faster.
The second one, I didn't like it and I didn't even know there was a third.
