Nice to read an article from the BBC as we celebrate this landmark film's 80th anniversary. Thanks for sharing.

The Swedish poster. Sad to say I've only seen this movie in a lousy public domain version that didn't make sense, since I suspect many scenes were missing. Jean Gabin was at his hights early career here. Erich von Stroheim was working his way down to poverty row pictures when this opportunity came, his greatest sound role besides Sunset Boulevard 1950 Jean Renoir soon fled to Hollywood, unlike many other frenchmen in Hollywood who soon returned to France. He stayed, he falled in love with the Californian lifestyle and called Beverly Hills his home for the remainder of his life, even if he made most of his movies abroad after the 1940s.

Thanks london777 Around 16 years ago, in the dying days of the VHS I chanced upon a copy of Renoir's film, a curious blind buy from an ex-rental bargain bin, I had only just begun taking an interest in film art. La Grande Illusion is the movie that got me absolutely hooked ! on classic film. The depth of story , acting, cinematography I was spellbound throughout and stunned by the glorious ending, many of the images are still fresh in my mind even though I have not seen it since that fateful initial discovery. about time for a re-watch !....
