I'm sure at one time in the late 1970s people thought Bill Crystal was gay. Portraying the "first" openly gay character on prime time TV in "Soap".
Anytime a relatively "unknown" actor has a breakout role as a homosexual many people assume they are gay.

Billy Crystal wasn't the first to portray an openly gay character on prime time TV. Norman Lear's Hot l Baltimore did that two years earlier and with a gay couple, yet.
This from Wikipedia:
The series had several controversial elements, including two primary characters who were prostitutes, one of whom was an illegal immigrant, and one of the first gay couples to be depicted on an American television series. Because of the subject matter, the show was the first ABC network show to have a warning at its opening, cautioning viewers about mature themes. (All in the Family, also produced by Norman Lear, ran a similar disclaimer when it debuted in 1971 on CBS, but ceased doing so with its second telecast.) The network supported the show and gave it a full publicity campaign, but it failed to win an audience and was canceled after 13 episodes. Its last telecast was June 6, 1975.

I remember a lot of hullabaloo about Tom Hardy a couple years ago.

You're referencing regularly-appearing series characters, but before both of those, Robert Moore made a one-time appearance as Phyllis's gay brother Ben Sutherland on a Jan '73 episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Two months earlier, Hal Holbrook and Martin Sheen had appeared as gay men in the ABC movie That Certain Summer.

Just about every actor or filmmaker had this topic on their message board back on IMDb:
"Is he/she gay?"

Eddie Murphy (heard the stories--makes me suspicious). His gay impression in The Golden Child is very very flamey.

First of all, how do we know who is straight/gay or isn't if they don't come out publicly?
A lot of people didn't know Rock Hudson as gay until after his death.
Personally I thought George Clooney was gay because I never heard or saw of him date anyone.
I assumed the guy that played Madea, Tyler Perry, was gay but then I heard he had a baby with someone.
Michael C. Hall was pretty damn convincing on Six Feet Under so it came as a surprise when I heard about his philandering.
I still think Oprah and Gayle are lovers and Stedman is their gay friend.
Eddie Izzard ... not really sure.

Eddie Izzard ... not really sure. Izzard claims he's a male lesbian, so I guess that makes him gay. I'm going with Jeremy Renner, a gay celeb who many think is straight.
