Last night, I pinpointed specific scenes I love in "Batman v Superman"
then I went back and just watched those scenes. They are really quite good.
-Lex talking to Sen. Finch in his dad's study. -Batman talking to Alfred about Superman's potential to destroy the world. -Superman talking to Lois about how he's not needed. -The Warehouse fight with Batman. -The fight between Trinity and Doomsday.
and so on and so forth...
The problem is, it's 3 films in one.
-"Man of Steel 2" -"The Dark Knight Returns" -"The Death of Superman"
If this had been a trilogy within the DCEU, it could have been special. Imagine the 3 stories in this 3 hour film divided into 3 films... 2 hours long each.
The culmination of "Death of Superman". While these 3 films were going on, the DCEU could have made these films...
2013: Man of Steel 2015: The Dark Knight Returns (after the events of Man of Steel) 2015: Man of Steel 2 (Superman's point of view following Man of Steel and the events of Dark Knight Returns) 2016: Wonder Woman 2016: Aquaman 2017: The Flash 2017: The Death of Superman 2018: The Justice League
Imagine the build up to the JL... That would have been epic, and it would have been about the same amount of time to JL. Instead of November 2017, it would be Summer 2018.

That's pretty much the biggest problem with BVS IMO. It has like 4 or five different movies crammed into three hours. I still think that Doomsday and anything regarding Justice League was unnecessary and that the Batman/Superman fight should've been the final set piece of the film.

Oh absolutely agree with you mello and Winter. After watching the movie a couple of times I realized they tried to cram way too much into it. If they had taken their time and spent the money to split these stories up into individual movies within the DC universe they would have faired much better.

No offense mellow, but haven't you made like 5-15 similar threads? Even back on imdb?

The problem is, it's 3 films in one. -"Man of Steel 2" -"The Dark Knight Returns" -"The Death of Superman" I have to say, this isn't the problem, it's the overall writing competence.
Captain America: Civil War was at least 3 films in 1 and it worked brilliantly. -Cap 3 -Avengers 3 -Black Panther 1
DC's biggest problem is their writing is like watching a soccer team who can only make long runs and crosses and doesn't have the finesse or vision to work the ball into a good position. DC so far has only shown they can construct a basic framework, but have no handle on the intricacies of strong character development or the emotional arc of almost any scene. They think you'll find an action scene interesting for the mere fact that it's an action scene. They think you'll find an emotional scene stirring simply because the characters look dramatic. There's more to generating those reactions within an audience, and they haven't been able to do it.

There are three scenes in BvS that I consider to be more than great: the Nightmare scene, the meeting of Bruce and Clark on the ground and roof before their fight, and the warehouse fight scene.
If you were in a coma before March of 2016, then woke up right now and watched those three scenes, you'd think it was the best superhero movie of all time.
Unfortunately the rest didn't pan out, but those three scenes were great out of context.

There's really no reason this movie couldn't have worked. Combining Man of Steel 2 with the Batman fighting Superman elements of The Dark Knight Returns was a pretty logical step, considering that leveling Metropolis probably wouldn't make the two instant buddies. As for Death of Superman, does it really need its own movie? Superman gets into a fight with a generic monster and the two punch each other to death. You can tag that onto the end of any movie. Here it fit (in theory), because Superman sacrificing himself at the end is pretty much the ultimate way to prove to the other characters and the world his devotion to humanity (the main thing that was in question throughout the entire movie).
The problem is much simpler - Zack Snyder. The guy is good with aesthetics and occasionally action scenes, but doesn't care about things like characters or story progression. He had two movies to make us care when Superman sacrifices himself, but didn't. Nor did he tie the "three different movies" together in a way that feels organic.
