Surprisingly adult Disney co-production and influence on George R.R. Martin.

7/10. It doesn't seem like a Disney movie at all but it's a solid fantasy movie. The dragon effects still look impressive but some flying scenes do look dated.

7/10 One of the best early 80s fantasy/adventure movies, that I am still surprised was a product of Disney, as it contained several graphic and unpleasant scenes, a very bleak/dark atmosphere, nudity, a rather shocking fate awaiting for the princess, some neat and very adult themed twists and turns and of course one of the meanest and most bad ass dragons ever put on the big screen. My only reason for not giving it a 8/10, is that I never really liked the main lead, who comes off as to cocky/arrogant from very early on, but again this is a very small complaint.

Agree with all of this.

Done at the time when Disney didn't know what to do, they made The Black Hole and Tron around the same time, but on one hand they wanted to appeal to a broader audience, or they could continue making the 12th Herbie slapstick movie as wholesome family entertainment. The result was subsidary company Touchstone a couple of years later. The critics at the time favoured Dragonslayer, and slaughtered Clash of the Titans, that both came out at the same time, the ticket paying audience favoured Clash.
Dragonslayer might not be a gem, but is well worth watching ,7/10 from me , to make up your own minds
