Anyone else scratch their head at this? It was all there. Built him up perfectly going up against Yoko. The next American Hero. They then went through a horrible time with Hart, HBK, Nash, etc as champs - and FYI - I'm fans of these guys - but the 'money guy' was there. Anybody else think they should have put the strap on Luger and ran with it? Eventually heel turn maybe after holding the strap for a few years? Maybe Hogan comes back to challenge? Flair? Sting comes in if they throw him money? I think Luger as Champ could have been huge if done correctly. Thoughts? Discuss.

I scratch my head because it seemed like Luger was being set up to take the strap twice.
Once I could understand. Maybe they just got cold feet. But for him to come up short at both Summerslam and Wrestlemania just seems odd.

But for him to come up short at both Summerslam and Wrestlemania just seems odd. I always read/hear stories from fans stating Vince hated outside talent. Do you think it had anything to do with that? Luger was a WCW/NWA talent and they wanted him to look weak per say. I just don't buy it myself - just too many guys/teams that go over in WWF(E) - ala Goldberg, Booker T, Jericho, The Dudleys, etc. There's got to be something there. I love the thought of giving him the strap as the American Hero - then a couple of years down the line - he starts to get a big head (like his character always did) - in comes Hogan out of nowhere to challenge or maybe Flair or Sting from his past. Don't people look at the early mid 90s when Hart/HBK/Diesel were all champs as 'failures' in a way? Ratings wise? Again - I'm fans of these guys (have my criticisms of Hart but that's neither here nor there). I just think if Luger was champ - he had it all - the look, charisma, always loved him as a heel - face not so much.

I wouldn't say Vince hates outside talent, but I do think he believes they aren't real stars until he makes it so.
As for Luger, I don't think that was the problem. After all, if Vince truly wanted him to look weak, he wouldn't have spent so much time and money on the whole Lex Express thing and having him win the Rumble.
Unfortunately, for a while it seemed to cement that Luger just couldn't win the big one. He'd been unable to dethrone Flair in WCW and now couldn't dethrone Yokozuna.
Fortunately, he turned all that around by showing up unannounced on Nitro.

For whatever reason in WWE if something big needs to happen it had to happen at WrestleMania. Trying to make him chase the title that long was a mistake.

He didn't get over like they'd hoped I think. Saddling him with the all american thing didn't help either. They wanted him to be the next Hulk Hogan.

I remember the 1994 period well. I was going to Madison Square Garden and I had my pick of whatever section I wanted to sit in because the place was 3/4 empty ::big grin:: My favorite memory that year was when Shawn wrestled Sid I think it was. After Sid had turned on him on tv and Shawn became a face. When Sid beat the crap out of Shawn at the Garden he got the biggest babyface pop I'd heard in years

When Shawn was with Sid they were both heels but when Shawn blamed Sid for a loss, Sid turned on him and power bombed him multiple times and that made Shawn the face. Diesel turned face not too long after that I believe. I think Diesel may have been the champ at that period and boy were the houses in the tank.

If youre curious, Jim Cornette discussed this:
"They wanted to stretch it to WMania. He (Vince) was convinced hed get more over. They celebrated with balloons etc, but the fans were thinking you didnt win the title. When WMania came around, he (Vince) soured on Lex. He found out what we knew in WcW he wasnt ready to be the guy yet, esp as a babyface" Good 5 minutes.

There's a handful of guys in wrestling I can listen to all day and they never get old. Cornette Bischoff Nash Russo (I get people hate him but I find him entertaining Bro) Bret Hart - his bitterness and being his biggest mark astounds me to this day - fascinating in a trainwreck sort of way Ole Anderson - hysterically bitter and just buries everyone - whenever I need a good laugh I put on an Ole shoot

They must've really thought the fans were clueless. Unless you'd been a fan for like a month or so you're going to know that a countout victory is not all that big of a deal and pretty much amounts to nothing. The balloons is what did it for me.

What did it for me was ALL the "babyfaces" coming out the back, like,"WHOOOO YOU DID IT, YOU WON BY......COUNTOUT! WHOOOOOOO CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON!" You'd think he just beat Hillary Clinton Donald Trump style. I dont mean to bring in politics but ffs....I was a little guy in 93, 10 years old and I knew,"this is fn stupid." The balloons and confetti were icing on the all around goofy cake.

LOL yeah I guess if you as a 10 year old knew what was up that just goes to show how low of an opinion they had of their fans thinking they would swallow that garbage.
