I just saw Detroit and while I did like it I found the pacing of the movie odd. The first 40 minutes felt like a very long exposition, almost to a documentary. Then it got really good for about 70 minutes, but then, the whole trial and consequences part, it seemed rushed and redundant at the same time. For an already long enough movie.
What did you think?
I would have been fine if it ended with the end of the night and then just a few lines before credits, letting us know the outcome of the trial. Instead of just a few rushed scenes from the trial and then credits. After more than an hour of a solid drama it was a bit of a let down.
but overall a very solid movie. Would recommend. 75%

Should have been an HBO movie--The Circle bombed also, Boyega has little appeal outside of Star Wars yeah, i cannot imagine the film doing too good in box office. and i somewhat agree it could (maybe even should) have been an HBO movie. but it was the pacing (or arc) of it that made me enjoy it less than it had the potential to… i would still recommend seeing it though. Will Poulter did a great job making us forget about the tarantula and singing from We Are The Millers.

I haven't seen Detroit, but I've noticed that many modern directors cannot pace worth a damn.
It's really a pretty serious problem. Pacing can really make or break the entire experience.

Controversial subject matter was never going to be a huge hit at all.

Wow, did this movie bomb--Only $2411 per theater, one of the lowest I've ever seen one of the problems may also be the trailer. it was somewhat misleading - making it seem like its mostly about the riots in Detroit at that time. Which maybe just now is not a story or event people want to think about. But the movie was actually about one particular incident. Not about the riots at all. I feel like more people would have gone to see it if they knew what it was really about…oh well.

Controversial subject matter was never going to be a huge hit at all. thats the thing. the movie is Not about the riots (I presume thats what you mean by the controversial subject matter). Its about one isolated incident that (the way portrayed in the movie) is not controversial (as in polarizing) at all I don't think…

The movie was really solid for me. Will Poulter and Algee Smith are the standouts with excellent support from John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, Hannah Murray and Kaitlyn Dever. The pacing was good for me. It only started to drag in the last half hour because of how intense and focused the mid act was. Overall I give it a 9/10. That score may rise on rewatches.

But maybe if I had known what to expect I would have felt differently. I agree it was a solid movie and the acting was outstanding.

I had known the majority of the story would take place at the motel before watching it. Perhaps on repeat viewings the pacing will improve for you.

This movie needs a packed blu-ray release agreed. I have been looking up some additional info about it and it seems that the survivors have "signed off" on the movie and approve of it, so maybe there will be some interviews wit them etc.
