Only...at no time is Dwight Schultz alone, so the film falls down at the title stage.
Very slow burner...slower than Halloween. The pace isn't so much of a problem as nothing really interesting being presented to us despite a good cast. Schultz's character is such a drip that I can't summon a single care if he lives or dies.
3/10

My mini-review a year back posted on another forum: Alone In The Dark (1982)"There are no crazy people, doctor, we're all just on vacation."When a small town is hit with a blackout, a group of mental patients decides to make great use of the chaotic situation and escapes with only one intention on their mind, which is to pay their new doctor a big surprise visit. On the DVD cover it looks like your "ordinary" early 80s slasher with horny teens getting chopped up by some unstoppable maniac with an oversized axe, but this one turned out to be quite the surprise. It features some truly great acting by legends such as Jack Palance, Martin Landau and Donald Pleascence. But also Erland Van Lindth who probably are most known for his opera singing baddie in The Running Man (1987) delivers a memorable and creepy role, but it is Dwight Schultz who steals the show. I have only seen him in more "crazy" lunatic roles such as H.M. Murdock in The A-Team (1983-1987) and when he is not outside kicking ass and irritating B.A. he spends most of the time inside a mental hospital for veterans, but here Dwight does a solid job as the "straight" family guy who has to get his shit together as he and his family are about to come face to face with pure evil. I really enjoyed this film. It has a chilling/unsettling vibe from the very beginning, great music and some creative and good gore scenes too. Alone in the Dark reminds me of classics such as Straw Dogs (1971) and Halloween (1978) more than the typical slasher films and one I think I will like even better when watching it later on for a second time around. 6,5/10

I have to admit I thought Alone In The Dark was pretty blah. But I really enjoyed Martin Landau's performance, he was enjoyable bonkers.
