Intense, exciting, nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, good little thriller.
Kind of like Taken or Nonstop, but with Halle Berry instead of Liam Neeson.
Not a huge fan of Halle Berry, aside from her being a hot little mama (all entendres intended), but this is a decent "vehicle" for her.
Plus a scary ending, not cheap-horror-thrills ending, but a legitimately suspenseful, heart-pounding, scary ending.
That's how you make a good, profitable movie.
Simple story, low budget, not one major star, but one star period, with everyone else unknowns, minimizing overhead and maximizing returns.
Also, great car stunt choreography, with some good cat-and-mouse moments/standoffs in between the highly kinetic chase scenes.
Done.

Seeing that this week and god do I need to see a decent one… Kinda like Taken or Nonstop? Sold.

Well, at the very least, don't expect more than you get from the trailer. What you see is what you get. I got exactly what I expected from the trailer.
And yes, kind of like Taken or Nonstop, but maybe with not as much layering or backstory as those have.
There is some backstory here, but very little and more to do with Halle Berry's character's relationship with her son and other family members, but nothing critical to the plot, which is basically her son is taken, and she literally doesn't stop until she gets him back.
On that basic, primal level, it delivers, at least for me.
Definitely not a dull moment.
Also, I think Halle Berry has some kind of interest in action crime thrillers. I didn't see it, but the last movie she did that is kind of similar to this in terms of theme if not actual construction and subject matter is the one where she plays a 911 dispatcher.
Also, to be more clear, when I say Taken, I really mean Taken 3, which I enjoyed for what it is, plus I like Nonstop.
And I like this.

I was beginning to wonder what happened to Halle. Hadn't seen her in a while.

Thought it was average, could have been much worse. Some good cinematography, kind of like a very poor man's Mad Max Fury Road.
But some odd choreography too, weird fixation on the speedometer like this is Fast and Furious or something. Awful dialogue Berry has to give at times (the God monologue as she's losing sight of her kid). Berry's mostly good but occasional overacting (think it was compensating for the shoddy material she had to deal with sometimes).
Still, could have been much worse. But probably better suited for a Netflix watch.

Wasn't as bad as I originally thought it would be. It was kinda stupid, but at the same time entertaining.
The one thing I really didn't like was her talking out loud all the time. The movie didn't seem to trust the audience to understand whats going on or what she is feeling, apparently. "oh you left your jacket there" "oh no, its not the mustang anymore" "oh god please help me" … made me think of the wonderful All is Lost where Redford spoke ONE word in 90 minutes ("fuck"), and I bet everybody understood the plot, what he was doing, thinking, and planning.
but other than that, not horrible at all. Didnt make me walk out like The Dark Tower. So… that means something… I would give it 55% and would recommend for a light and lazy summer Thursday afternoon movie, when you skip school or work and just want to get lost somewhere for 2 pain-free hours.

Well, don't get me wrong, it's not Academy Award-worthy material (much of which I don't care for anyway).
But it's good for what it is, what you see is what you get.
Entertaining and engaging, at least for me.

I too enjoyed Kidnap—I consider it "pretty good." The film is a little over the top, but it is straightforwardly tense. Even though, in retrospect, the outcome is entirely predictable, the movie never plays predictably—it keeps the viewer fully concerned with what is occurring in the moment. Halle Berry really fits the role, both physically (in terms of a certain amount of realistic athleticism) and mentally, and the New Orleans/Louisiana bayou setting—while not magnetically utilized from a visual perspective—somehow seems appropriate and enhances the tension (even if the filmmakers might have largely selected it for tax credit purposes).
As the original poster alluded to, the real point is that the movie offers legitimate suspense and thrills in a vintage manner, without resorting to spectacular special effects, endless plot twists, or the gimmickry that one often encounters these days. Clint Eastwood has stated that all movies are "what-if deals." Well, Kidnap really works as one big "what-if," one filled with a lot of little and effective "what-ifs" along the way.
In short, if you want to witness an old-fashioned, spare, no-nonsense thriller, see Kidnap before it leaves theaters. It will not change your life, but it will give you bang for your buck.
