Please direct me if there's another Ray Donovan thread here somewhere.
Spoilers.
Just watched the season premiere. Is anyone else as stunned and bummed out as I am by the big plot development?

I'm sure it's because I don't remember a lot of stuff from last season but I was confused about a lot of what was going on. I'm hoping that the addition of Susan Sarandon will help the series.

Yes, I love Susan Sarandon but I'm referring to the fact that ... ...Abby is dead.

It's odd they are making everything a mystery explained through flashback. Last week had me confused for a bit and I was wondering if I had watched too many episodes while smoking quality marijuana. Then I realized we have to wait and see as the season unfolds.
I am happy they added Lili Simmons. Mmmmmmmmmm Do you get the feeling they are trying to make Abbey more likable? Well compared to how annoying she was in previous seasons? Mickey too maybe? It looks like "connah" pretty much got the boot all together.
One thing is for sure. It has to better than last season. That was a dumpster fire.

I am making room for the fall so I finally watched the first ep.
Technically that cop could get in trouble for using his position to look up stuff on people. It's not allowed. I know people who were fired over stuff like that.

IMO, the flashbacks are a boat anchor around the show's neck this season.

Good Lord, this season couldn't get any grimmer. After this last episode we had to watch The Vietnam War documentary just to cheer up.

Did I miss something? Probably I did, but...
A few episodes ago, when Mickey was locked in the trunk of a car, he was expected to pick up Bunchy's baby from Daycare. He didn't show up, because he was preoccupied. Did they ever show what happened to the baby? The last we saw, the Daycare provider was waiting on Mickey to show up.
I know they're jumping around the timeline (to fit Abby into the script.....far too much), so maybe it will be addressed.....or maybe the writers forgot about it.

As far as I know, Bunchy’s baby is still with the nice daycare woman. That would be the luckiest break that baby will ever get.

is anyone really liking this season?
Even with a minimal amount of Ray's kids and wife (which is a good thing), this season seems to have fallen off a cliff, IMO.

Stuff just seemed to happen and then be forgotten. One of the worst crimes was having the gorgeous Lili Simmons appear in several episodes and never get naked.

When the season started with the reveal that Abby had died, I hoped with her out of the picture, so to speak, we would get some good stories but no.... It brcame obvious that the writers had gotten bored with Ray and the Donovans and the season was going to be a lingering farewell to Mrs D. WTF Ray ever saw in her I'll never know. The stories concerning Terry and Bunchie went nowhere and only Mick injected some life into the season. I wasn't happy about the Avi story either. With HER out of the way, I thought that Ray would cheer up but....Would've loved to see Terry or Bunchie kick the shit out of Ray, just once.

With Abby dead, I thought the lack of her character would make a better season.......nope! With Conor (mostly) gone, I thought it would make a better season......nope! With Bridget (kind of) gone, I thought it would make a better season......nope! Instead, the writers demolished Avi's character. Daryll seemed like a puppy dog on a leash. Terry's stories didn't have a lot of substance. Ray's stories were a mess. At least Bunchy stood up to his wife. I didn't like Mickey's goofy movie script plot, but the pending feud between Ray and Mickey seems worthwhile. At one time, I really looked forward to watching the show. Now I'm debating on watching another season.

I just saw the movie. 3/10. You're given an opportunity to tie the loose ends of your cancelled series (something not everyone gets), and what do you do? Dedicate half the running time to flashbacks that aren't really needed and dedicate the other half to modern day meandering. Great plan! What, did they take all the ideas they had for season 8 and condense them into a 100 page script? Even with more time, it wouldn't have been a satisfying conclusion. Decades of family toxicity and it all ends by highlighting Ray and Mickey's bond? Screw that! Showing the parallels between Ray's arrest in the present and Mickey's arrest in the past would've made sense if the reasoning had been the same, but no. The former was a sacrifice and the latter was a set-up. Also, I understand that Mickey's death scene came out of nowhere because the makers wanted to shock the audience, but that doesn't really work with a story that has been going on for years. Especially because there was an old episode with a death fake out for him.
