It worked in the context of the film, and so there's nothing wrong with it perse', but you are sort of left with that desire to get an actual Mandarin movie. Basically it was a tease.

And I'll bet the real Madarin, if/when he does show up, won't be Chinese, either. No need to bring in the "Yellow Peril" stereotype.

They can make him whatever they want to.

It was stupid, but it didn't ruin the movie.
I just wonder why they hired Ben Kingsley for a throw-away role? Especially when he was so good in it early on.

I rather enjoyed the Mandarin twist. It reminded me of a little known cinematic spin on Sherlock Holmes that Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine starred in together called Without A Clue.

Dirty trick to defend whitewashing Ben Kingsley is half Indian though...

Huge wasted opportunity. I still liked IM3 as a popcorn flick overall but that twist definitely downgraded it from potentially becoming a phenomenal movie to a simply fun one. That build up starting with the first movie wound up pointless. And Ben Kingsley's Mandarin being an updated terrorist mastermind was way more interesting than Guy Pearce continuing the Iron Man films' tradition of having some slimeball in a suit as the heavy.

It absolutely ruined the movie for me. I have no previous knowledge of the character but the trailers were selling me on this character in the movie it had me incredibly excited to see this character and Iron Man go at it. When that twist happened I legit felt robbed of getting what the movie was selling me and it ruined the rest of the film for me. Iron Man 3 is half of a good movie because I was enjoying it until that twist and when that twist happened I turned a complete 180 on that film and hated it.

I had no attachment to the comic book Mandarin so I wouldn't have minded if not for three things...
1) The trailers literally had fake dialogue: multiple awesome Mandarin quotes that weren't in the actual movie. They sold us on a great performance by Kingsley that didn't actually exist. That was a BS move by Marvel.
2) The movie was one of Marvel's worst and its actual villains were quite weak.
3) The twist was played for cheap laughs. Ha ha the bathroom stinks because he just pooped in it! I mean, really?? Poop jokes in such a pivotal moment???

When they reboot the MCU, maybe they'll try a different take on it.

It turned what should have been a decent movie into trash.

That being said, I liked the twist and frankly it's the only part of the movie that is memorable (in fact I forgot all about it but that scene).

When they reboot the MCU, maybe they'll try a different take on it. Colden I am super worried that the MCU is so flawed at this point that a simple reboot may not do it anymore; I am all for a re-reboot - you know like when you have to double flush down a famously huge turd?

As usual post phase 1 turned what could have been a worthy Iron Man foe, like Obidiah Stane, into a murky meta joke that robbed the rest of the film from any integrity.

That may be what it takes at this point.
