Have you seen this show? I just discovered this show on Netflix. I'm on episode two as of this typing. I'm liking it so far!
There are a few actors whose name I see and I automatically check out the movie because 99.9 % of the time I'm going to enjoy it. Jason Bateman is one of those actors, so I'm not surprised it's a quality show. I am enjoying the character development and the element of surprise. Bateman was the quintessential good guy early in his career, but more recently he's become quite the master of the complex, sarcastic, mischievous, smart azz. Laura Linney is good too per usual. The writing of the show is good. The plot is coming together.
It's been a while since I've seen a series that has captured me. Either they're too dark and slow (Bloodline), too raunchy, too something. But this one at least so far has me intrigued.
No spoilers please, but anyone who's seen it, does it stay as good as the series progresses?

A lot of people loved it. I thought it was okay for what it was. A very obvious attempt to combine Breaking Bad with Justified. Unfortunately, it has none of the superior writing, nuances or character development of either one of those shows.
However, you should watch it and judge for yourself.

I finished the season.
I thought the show was half dull and half brilliant. The first episode was sooooo dark, I almist gave up on it there, but it "lightens up" for most of the season.
Jason Bateman directed the best episodes.
I simply don't care too much about the characters right now.
The show would be better suited to having us connect with someone we can actually care for, but the family overall is pretty selfish.

I have been hearing quite a bit about this show lately. several local sports talk show hosts have been raving about it, which I think is interesting The ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and metacritic are just okay. I think they are higher on IMDb. People seem to be pretty divided on it.

Okay I finished the series season one now. My verdict: 8/10. I loved it, but I didn't love everything about it. I thought there were gratuitous plot twists. A lot that was thrown in each episode was just unnecessary although it did have the benefit of keeping the viewer engaged. The show never got boring, this seemed to be the writers' main concern and on that, they were successful.
But I like the character study more than anything and I think quality writers recognize that this is what distinguishes it from average shows. This show happens to have superb actors who could deliver fascinating character studies were the writers to allow for it in favor of silly plot twists (i.e. The bar manager's inmate father bidding her to kill the main character. Wtf? Not only is it absurd that an inmate would be openly planning murder right there in the prison, but you know the main character is not getting killed so that storyline can't go anywhere anyway, so what's the point of it again?) One of my favorite shows of all time, Rectify, understood this better than most. The characters are what make the story. Cheap plot twists are not needed if the character writing and acting are quality enough.
My biggest pet peeve though was the obligatory gay relationship. Is this now a requirement for modern shows? How ridiculous to insinuate that a heterosexual father must have latent homosexual feelings because he was approached by a homosexual. The gay guy just happened to "know" the other guy really wanted him deep down. I rolled my eyes when I realized where the writers were taking this and I subsequently fast-forwarded through all of those characters' joint scenes. I hate feeling like I'm a pawn in some agenda-driven activist's scheme. #No thanks What I loved about the aforementioned show, Rectify, is that the writers didn't feel obligated to try to indoctrinate the viewers into this kind of thing. They resisted the tide of the industry and I think the viewers were so grateful to them for it. I know I was. 🙏
Anyway, there's my verdict. It's been a long time since I've discovered a show that actually excited me, that actually stuck with me and made me think and care about the characters wonder about the story. I can't wait for the next season! I hope the writers tweak the things I mentioned to make the show even better. But if you are on the fence about watching it, I recommend you do. I'm giving it two thumbs up. 👍

A lot of people seem to love it. I thought it was okay and it didn't bore me too badly but it never lived up to the promise of the pilot. It felt like the showrunners made a check list of things they wanted to rip off from Breaking Bad and Justified and just jammed stuff in to make sure they could cross it off the list.
You already mentioned the pointless gay federal agent storyline but the "hillbillys" were not much better. Peter Mulan with his thick Scottish accent was really shitty casting as the head "hillbilly". The long redneck vs hillbilly monologue was painfully stupid. It was something a writer that never has even been camping would think was clever and homespun.
Also nothing that happened felt organic. Everything that occured was just to advance the plot and check off another box. Also is it smart for a money launderer on the run to tell every person he meets he's a money launderer on the run or to "hide" his laundered money and do his clandestine activities where anyone can observe him?
It seemed more like a spoof to me most of the time but no one told the cast it was a spoof or maybe they did.

Im currently watching it. I'm about halfway through season 1. So far I'm really enjoying it. Jason Bateman does a really great job as the lead.

He is better lead than he has a script I think. I did enjoy the show a lot and am looking forward to a new season but without Bateman I am not sure I would finish the first season with such gusto (if at all)… I think Breaking Bad forever broke my standards and expectations as far as TV Dramas go…
