Spielberg has probably directed more of my favorite films than anyone so it was something of a disappointment when I finally sat down to watch E.T. Other than some solid performances, it didn't work for me. Not a bad film but nowhere near the quality I expected. I guess it was a sign of the times that this film (very light and hopeful) was a huge success in every way whereas Carpenter's The Thing (very dark and hopeless) was a huge failure. I prefer The Thing, which I think is a masterpiece. I give E.T. a 7/10.

I still remember my 11 year old self watching this film in the theatre, back in 1982, and crying my eyes out when E.T. "died". I gotta go with a 10/10.

8/10 - I enjoyed it. I was 15 when i saw it, and the movie was a little too child-catering for me to score it any higher, but still an entertaining film.
I actually preferred Poltergeist, which came out that same summer and was also directed by Spielberg (even though he wasn't credited for it).

watched it the other day and loved it. i only seen the film a few times in my life. i could recall when i saw it as a kid in the theater, i didn't really understand what was happening during the second half of the film once the government workers started taking everything over.

What was E.T. a child? He was acting to "primitive" for a member of a technological superior civilization. I know, it's a kids movie, but that doesn't excuse to treat kids as that dumb or that I have to like it.
It hurts the entire feeling for the movie what is why I never cherrished it. 6/10.
And - of course - the evil government...as there were no sound reasons to put him in quarantine.
But I guess this was before SARS and Ebola rang a bell.

I actually gave this film a vote of 10 here . For me it had a most memorable yet sentimental place in my heart that I never forgot about . It also taught me early on from it's rudimentary storyline . That helping someone in true need should be paramount over what others of the masses may disagree with you on . Also with these certain masses selfishly deciding what is best for their own interests and not the individuals needs or wants . I also agree the 1982 JC film The Thing was an excellent movie too . Thanks jamesavalon for your subject post .

this is the movie where spielburg lost his command of technique, lots of mediocre shots, lots of the pratfall humor he used badly on 1941, it got worse with temple of doom which could have been made by any hack, never recovered

I still don't know for sure if I should give it a 9/10 or a 10/10. I gave it a 10/10 in the poll, but I'll have to rewatch it to be sure. Anyways, it's a beautiful movie with some of the most iconic scenes and shots in movie history.

I will forever regret that I saw this but not the Thing.
I remember it as ok and have not watched it since--I dont know, 1989? That is when it came out on video. Just not interested in revisiting.

6/10 – too cutesy. Message: Kids, your parents are filled with prejudices and fears.
