While i expect GTA V to have the most votes in this poll, simply because it's sold 80,000,000+ copies (which makes it one of the all-time highest selling games), i am mainly curious to see how many around here are more like myself that consider Mafia III underrated and GTA V overrated as i can't be the only person out there who feels Mafia III is definitely overall more enjoyable than GTA V.
i finished GTA V early this month basically and while it was enjoyable enough to finish it i have little to no desire to replay it where as i am not sure how far i am into Mafia III at the moment (but it seems to be getting better-and-better the further i get into it) i can already tell it's going to stand out like the past two games of the series did (i consider Mafia (on PC), which i first played in Aug 2002 when it was new, a masterpiece (a word i rarely use) and while Mafia II did not have the same impact on me, it's still top notch) as the characters/story and overall game is just more enjoyable and it's soundtrack etc is a nice bonus (GTA 5's soundtrack is not bad either but overall i prefer Mafia III's which helps add to Mafia III's old days feel etc).
even comparing the two black guys you play as in GTA 5 (Franklin) vs Mafia III (Lincoln Clay)... i feel Mafia III's is deeper (there is more feeling/emotion there) where as the one from GTA 5 seems a bit more empty and acts more like your typical street thug. but Franklin has his moments and, on a positive note, GTA 5 does have a decent humor aspect at times with Franklin etc. with that said... i know GTA 5 has two other characters you play as (Michael/Trevor) and as far as that goes my preference of those chararacters is like this... 1)Michael 2)Franklin 3)Trevor. i tend to like those more quiet/low key/professional characters instead of the loud/psycho types of which Trevor is a perfect example of the psycho type(but i guess some people like that type of character). but Trevor did grow on me a bit as the game progressed. but i will say they (Michael/Franklin/Trevor) meshed well together in GTA 5 as each is noticeably different from the other.
as far as GTA 5's ending options.... i picked the
also, Mafia III is more challenging than GTA 5 (i am playing Mafia III on the highest difficulty setting and switched driving to 'simulation' mode to) as Mafia III requires more restraint/patience then in GTA 5 when it comes to general shooting/chaos etc as with GTA 5, on a typical shooting mission, you basicaly go there, whack all of the guys(which is not that difficult in general), and your finished. with Mafia III it's more of a stealth/brute force method but stealth is more beneficial as i usually get a silenced pistol and sneak around clipping guys in areas i need to clip em and can do it a fair amount without blowing my cover (you can even whistle to lure guys out a bit at times). but you can get killed quickly if you just try to rush into a place and go off on everyone (especially if there are many enemies) as with the way the weapons system is in Mafia III it's not as easy to get headshots/to kill enemies in general like it is with GTA 5. plus, it has that game mechanic i noticed in the Hitman series (which is one of the better series i have played) where if your in a area and they spot you it has that white thing on screen showing their alertness to your presence and if it gets up too high they will come after you etc. but if you stay out of their site you can avoid em and work on getting headshots etc to take em out more quietly. so if your just one of those people who likes chaos and wants to blow crap up... GTA 5 is definitely going to be better for you than Mafia III as i would say GTA 5 is a faster paced game as Mafia III does somewhat require more driving especially if you don't want to risk losing $$$ earlier in the game because the way the game is setup say you got $1000 on you and then you die you lose half of whaever your carrying on you every time you die so in order to avoid that you got to drive it to your safe house type of thing and store it in a safe in your basement which can require a decent amount more driving if you don't want to risk losing your $$$ on your person. but as the game progresses you get a method to call up someone and they immediately come to you in a car (which takes seconds) and you walk up to the car and give it to them for safe storage and then if you die you don't lose any $$$ that way.
also, in terms of weapons... one area that makes Mafia III more challenging is you don't have a boatload of ammo either. at this point in the game... i got 7 shots in the clip with 21 in reserve, for my silenced pistol, and for my automatic/more beefed up guns, like the AK-47 etc, i got 30 shots in the gun with 60 in reserve. so you can't just rain the bullets down on your enemies like you can in GTA 5 where you can get a HUGE stock of ammo in reserve (like hundreds or thousands of shots with most weapons in GTA 5). so Mafia III requires more restraint/discipline otherwise you can run out of ammo quickly. but after shooting people they typically drop ammo for your guns so it helps refill your ammo. but if you get too crazy with your shooting without being able to clean up the dropped ammo from dead enemies you can get in hot water.
also, from what i could make out with general reviewers on Mafia III is it seems like mixed reviews and the ones who dissed it did not seem to care for the general stuff you got to do in the game (some claimed it was repepetive(and it is a fair amount of the time but it does not bother me because i like the sneaking around taking the enemies out etc)) but still seemed to agree the games story was basically it's strongest point if the general gameplay itself manages to keep you interested enough to see all of it play out. but with that said... i can see why some might prefer GTA 5's style over Mafia III especially since GTA 5 is easier and does not require as much restraint etc. but i think for someone who can appreciate Mafia III's style will probably like it more than GTA 5.
also, just in terms of Mafia vs GTA series in general... i think weapons etc just feel better as the Mafia games just feel more sophisticated where as GTA feels more simple and i always like the general old days setting the Mafia games have.
also, i have had more tense moments in Mafia III than with GTA 5 and i am probably not all that far into Mafia III either and finished GTA 5.
with all of that said... i am not saying GTA 5 sucks or anything but it just don't have that lasting impact on me to come back to it and replay it in the future like the Mafia series does. the first Mafia game on the PC is still the pinnacle of single player video game experiences for me as the feeling etc it gave me you just don't get from video games pretty much and need movies etc to pull it off (i replayed Mafia (2002) a fair amount as the years passed as it's nearly 15 years old now and plan on replaying that and Mafia II probably before this year is finished but ill finish up Mafia III first for sure). while Mafia II did not quite have the magic of the first game, it's still pretty damn good and with Mafia III, while i still am playing it(so i got to reserve judgement til i am finished with it), should at least be not far behind Mafia II at the least and would still make it amongst the best games i played over the years as i been playing video games since before the 3D era which is pretty much 1995-1996+ as at that time i would have been 15-17 years old (ill be 38 in October).
but speaking of Mafia/Mafia II/Mafia III... i like how there is one mission in Mafia II that tied into the first game (nice nostalgia etc(i won't say what for those who have not played them)) and with the 2nd game to the 3rd game you got Vito returning (Vito is the guy you play as in Mafia II) who your main character in Mafia III (Lincoln Clay) does missions for etc.
one last thing... if someone never played Mafia (2002) or Mafia II (2010) i would play those first before playing Mafia III (2016) as that will help give you the best experience with Mafia III (at the least i would play Mafia II before playing Mafia III). but i will say Mafia III is noticeably different from Mafia/Mafia II in some aspects which could push some people away from it as the shooting feels different and took me a bit of time to adjust to as this is one area i could see some people potentially complaining about as it's different.
p.s. i played all games mentioned above on the PC as i don't like shooter types of games on consoles as it's just difficult to aim quickly with a analog stick vs a mouse and makes it hard to enjoy playing shooter games on consoles because of that.
SIDE NOTE: one little cool thing i noticed is Lincoln Clay (the lead character in Mafia III) looks just like the voice actor who voices that Lincoln Clay character... mafiagame.wikia.com/wiki/Alex_Hernandez

as far as GTA 5's ending options.... i picked the
save myself(Franklin)/Michael/Trevor instead of the 'kill Michael' or 'kill Trevor' options
which was the best/most satisfying of the three endings you can choose from in my opinion because as far as endings go i prefer it like this... 1)save Franklin/Michael/Trevor 2)kill Trevor 3)kill Michael. i mostly enjoyed 'kill Trevor' over 'kill Michael' because i just feel more connected to Michael/Franklin than Trevor in general. so other people might feel differently depending on how much you like each character etc.
