There is a problem though and it's glaring: I couldn't tell that this was a Steven Spielberg movie.

That's not a problem. Both will flop. lol
kidding. I hope this gives Spielberg another hit, but I think today's audiences are jaded towards his particular brand of awe.

I thought the trailer was pretty bad, especially on repeat viewings. I feel like Spielberg has given up.
A CGI fest about 80s and 90s nostalgia is nothing new or interesting to me.

A movie about people using VR games to escape boring lives is nothing new? I can accept that you're not interested but how is that not a novel idea? I've personally never seen anything like this movie anyway.

While I agree that this specific story hasn't been told before (with video games as the backdrop), the concept is nothing all that new. The nostalgia from the 80s and 90s is something that we see all the time now (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, Wreck it Ralph, etc.). I might be judging it too quickly, as only one trailer has released. Hopefully it proves me wrong and Spielberg makes a good movie.

Looks like someone chewed up and vomited a spielberg movie.

He's got another wartime drama coming out in December about the Pentagon Papers.

I'm wondering if they'll make a movie out of the author's last book, Armada.

I'm really looking forward to this one!
I finished reading the book a day or so ago.

I can some being worried it might seem like a Last Starfighter knock-off, but that twist at the end might convince them.

The set-up was, I mean the book even mentions Last Starfighter (and most every other major sci-fi movie too). But the ending totally twists it all around.
