It's either been Superman or Batman. So this is something new at least. Well, actually this is not the first time a female superhero has been the leader of the 'Justice League.' There were various other lineups and Supergirl was the leader a few times in the lineup with her, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Stargirl, Hawkman, Equinox and Adam Strange.

Black Canary was actually the leader for a while as well.
In terms of the "Trinity", None of them have ever been that actual leader. It was either all three working together, or it was someone else.
There is an argument that in the JL Cartoon, that Martian Manhunter was the leader.
In the DCEU, it makes perfect sense for WW to be the leader. Batfleck is too jaded, Superman is dead, and when he comes back, Cavill's Superman is definitely one who would defer leadership. It's definitely not Flash or Cyborg, and Aquaman has his own kingdom to lead.
WW is charismatic, inspirational, a trained and experienced warrior...I see literally no reason why she shouldn't be the leader.

From a purely logical standpoint, I never really understood why Batman was considered the leader. He himself has stated multiple times that he doesn't play well with others. He's a loner and a vigilante. And though a great tactician that doesn't necessarily translate to great leader.

In a realistic scenario, Batman would be best utilized as an adviser or a consultant.

There is an argument that in the JL Cartoon, that Martian Manhunter was the leader. In the JL cartoon, it was more of a democracy. They had a round table where the founding members would each have an equal vote. When they were deciding if Hawkgirl should stay or go after they found out she was originally sent to Earth as a spy for the Thanagarians, the founding members took a vote.
