One of the best TV series ever.
A studio based series from the 70s might not seem that appealing, but the writing and acting are top notch.
Initially, there is one downside, the plethora of characters that are introduced can make it a little dizzying, and slightly difficult to follow, as a result it does seem to start off a little slow-paced, but it then gathers pace - the quality of writing, the plotlines, and the intrigue, make it ripe for binge-watching.
Then there is the quality of acting from the likes of Jacobi and Hurt. Yes, it may come across as 'Shakespearean', but the depths of the soul that they plunge to, make up for that. The really surprising performance, though, is from Brian Blessed, sans beard. He is usually equated with pure bombast, but in, I, Claudius, he gives such an incredibly understated, and deft performance, it's an absolute marvel to watch.
All in all it is a great treatise on human nature, and really fun to watch.
To those who haven't seen it, and it looks of interest, and is dithering over whether it's worth a shot, I can't recommend it highly enough.

Yes. I found it a bit harrowing, but very good. I went off it a bit later when I found out how different some of the characters were in real life - Augustus for instance was a hard ruthless man, not a lovable old buffer like he's portrayed as being n this series, nor ws Claudius as fastidious as he is shown in this - in real life he absolutely loved the gladiator fights for instance. Some great performances though.

I watched it years ago and loved every minute. No CGI, no fabulous sets or costumes, just good writing and acting.

The TV series was a worthwhile adaptation of one of the greatest english language novels of the 20th Century. Read the books to get a better idea of the character flow.
