The survival rate for the crew of the Indianapolis, was worse than that of all crew and passengers that ended up surviving the sinking of the Titanic in frigid waters, more than 33 years earlier........25% (Indy) vs. 32% (Titanic), roughly speaking. Can't imagine what would have been worse.......being attacked and killed by the sharks outright, or having to watch AND listen, as it happened to your crew mates, over, and over again (only to THEN end up dying anyway, due to exposure, salt poisoning and/or thirst)? After surviving all of that, those that did end up getting rescued, had spent nearly 5 full days in the water. Does anybody know the reasons, if any, that allowed the crew of the Indy to complete their mission of delivering the A-bomb parts BEFORE being sunk........or was it simply just "dumb luck" that it happened to work out that way?? If historically accurate, the film with Nick Cage reveals information that made my skin crawl. Even the Japanese U-boat commander testified on behalf of the Indianapolis' commander because he (the Jap commander) couldn't come to grips why the Americans did not rescue the sailors, regardless of the so-called top secret mission...according to the film, the Indy's commander committed suicide after being courts martialed...and eventually, President Clinton exonerated the commander...a day late and a dollar short...
