No surprise since it plays like a British WW2 propaganda film.
6 million dollars in Germany after 3 weeks compared to the 18 million for Baywatch and 11 million for Valerian.

Well, first Germany bombed Dunkirk and now the situation is reversed.

I don't see how it's a "British propaganda" film. We don't ever even see a single Nazi in full focus.
They never go out of their way to say just how great they are and how bad everyone else is.
This movie is an obvious success and people just love to try and belittle it at this point.

No German characters... From what I hear, other than a couple of Bf-109s and a Stuka, the Germans are completely invisible.
They could just as easily be Martians.
BTW... INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS was a big hit in Germany.

I cannot quite confirm that. 1) "Dunkirk" is still running in German cinemas, (5. week) it's not a block buster but might still run some weeks, so it adds up (I think I want to see it again in 70mm ... ) 2) the audience is mixed - some popcorn entertainment seeking teens (among them some fan girls of a certain person ...) but also some typical arthouse audience (that isn't so much oriented at having to see a movie in the first week) 3) both the audience's and the critic's reaction are mostly positive, the film is not seen as propaganda So it cannot be said that the film "bombs" ... yet The only thing I really wonder is the success of "Baywatch" - perhaps because there's self irony in it? I'd like "Valerian" (6. week in Germany) to get some more audience. Though the story is not something special the creativity that had been put into the film is astounding and the visit is worthwhile! I wonder whether some of the bad reviews in America are because of economic reasons ... (Hollywood in self defense mode ...) Oh - and by the way I really like that the newest "Smurf" movie turned out to be a real long distance runner in German cinemas. Out of all "Smurf" movies it's the one that fits the best into the fantastic world comic author Peyo created. For all who want to have a look at the data we have to wait until the PDFs for July/August 2017 appear on this page: www.ffa.de/filmhitlisten.html(Button "Filmhitlisten 2017")

I guess they were more receptive when Germany bombed in Dunkirk.

It's a inventive idea (don't know whether it has been done before that way) and part of the artistic concept of the movie. BTW... INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS was a big hit in Germany. It has to be said that this was especially because the German audience did notice the different levels of irony and card board characters Tarantino was playing with in that movie. Tarantino had chosen German actors who understood these different levels in playing "card board" Nazis.
