First of all, it's very interesting that she has gone back and updated her stories to fit in the modern time...are they better for it? The reviews are mixed...but it's interesting because you can read one and then you can see how it compares to the other version.
I loved this book, I think I read it in a couple of days which is rare for me. The original is superior and it's ironic because back then people tried to censor and ban her books for stuff like the language, the swearing, and these days she is able to amp up the swearing, but the dad talking about 'boys who cook/dress like women', she clearly had freer reign with the original when the dad's saying he would kill his own son if he turned out like that, and today it's very toned down and nowhere near as shocking.
Though I think she missed her mark during that segment too, because when the dad's saying his sons will never cook because that's women's work, the wife responds with 'there's nothing feminine about chopping up vegetables'. No forget the vegetables, what is feminine about taking a huge knife and cutting through meat and bone to chop up dead animals? What's so feminine about cutting a whole chicken apart, etc?
And I think this could especially be made into a hit movie now because the rebooted version would actually kind of mesh with recent political events. It doesn't matter what intentions a group starts out with if the wrong people are leading it and let it spearhead into an all out mob.
