'Marked Men' is a prison flick, crime drama and survival adventure rolled into one. Bill Carver (Warren Hull) has been framed for murder by gangster Joe Mallon (Paul Bryar). Bill breaks out of jail and hides out in Tempe, Arizona where he finds work assisting medical practitioner Doctor James Prentiss Harkness (John Dilson). When the professor's daughter Linda (Isabel Jewell) witnesses a miraculous act she realises there's more to Bill's story than he's letting on. Can Marshal Dan Tait (Lyle Clement) put convicted killer Carver back behind bars?
'Marked Men' is a low budget crime programmer directed by prolific b-movie maestro Sam Newfield under one of the pseudonyms (Sherman Scott) he adopted at Producers Releasing Corporation. There's a long stretch in the desert that mirrors solitary confinement and an even longer stretch connected to a man hunt. The sweltering sand is awoken by the sounds of howling coyotes and bristling cactus needles as Bill Carver tests his endurance to the limits. Bill's loyal companion Wolf (Grey Shadow) the dog accompanies him to a small suburb of Tempe where they meet tiny dog Hercules (Tiddler) and his owner Linda.
'Marked Men' is charming and well observed when dealing with Bill's new life within a tight-knit community. After one night in town, the locals are ready to marry Linda off to Bill and Wolf is joined at the hip with Hercules. This part of the film celebrates politeness, good manners and common decency, calling on Bill to do the right thing. But while the story's mid-section offers Bill small comforts, it's book-ended by the rough stuff, beginning in purgatory and ending in hell.
Warren Hull shows grit and determination as desperate escapee Bill Carver and Isabel Jewell is bright and level-headed as volunteer worker Linda Harkness in this concise drama that benefits from swift, economical filmmaking. Dog lover Sam Newfield would go on to direct 'Wolf Dog' (1958) with Jim Davis and Allison Hayes. Isabel Jewell can also be seen as one of the 'Marked Women' (1937).
